They do however to me all of this looks like pissing competition, not who is better but who is worse.

Personally I always ask these questions to decide if I consider certain society enlightened or not (again all based on my beliefs or lack of them):

1) Can I express unhappiness about government without being jailed or murdered.
2) Can I practice (or not) beliefs that are minority in given society.
3) Are women equal to men in eyes of the law?
3.1) Can women drive?
3.2) Can women pursue any educational path as they please?
3.3) Can women pursue any line of work as they please?
4) How are minorities treated (religion, LGBT, other unconventional lifestyle groups.
5) Is press free (at least to degree)?
6) Is government oppressing any group within or outside of its borders?

Simple list but it can give some pointers about society.

He really should have just admitted he's wiling to go where ever he's paid the best and left it at that. Better yet, should have ignored the twitter trolls. A lot of people are willing to earn money in ****hole(tm) countries in private while disparaging them in public. He wouldn't be the first.
