The official Twitter account of the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation has been suspended for "aggressive following" behaviour, the foundation said on Thursday.

The account was suspended just hours after it was opened on Thursday, spokesman Roger Friedman said.

"The @TutuLegacy is the only real Twitter account that speaks for the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, through the voices of Desmond Tutu and the reverend Mpho Tutu, who runs the foundation," Friedman said in a statement.

The foundation was perplexed as to the reasons for the shutdown. Twitter had not explained how 30 people could be construed as "aggressive following", or whether the number of people who followed @TutuLegacy in a short space of time was to blame, he said.

"I hope the powers that be at Twitter find it in their hearts to fix the problem and let us communicate again. We need to reassure all those people who started following us today that this is the real deal," Friedman said.

As Tutu planned to cut down on his travel, the foundation saw Twitter and Facebook as a means for the Nobel Peace Prize laureate to communicate with people.

I am sure I remember reading that when the previous Pope started his Twitter account, he had a crazy number of people following him in a very short space of time.

So what is going on here?

That is not the issue.

The issue is why so few followers caused Twitter to gag the account when they did not do that for other users.

Some kind of rules engine I'd think. IP address and countries have less thresholds than others or something similiar.

That is not what "Aggressive Following" is, it's the other way around, when THEY follow OTHERs.

What is aggressive following?

Aggressive following is defined as indiscriminately following hundreds of accounts just to garner attention. However, following a few users if their accounts seem interesting is normal and is not considered aggressive.

What are the limits

We don’t limit the number of followers you can have. However, we do monitor how aggressively users follow other users. We try to make sure that none of our limits restrain reasonable usage, and will not affect most Twitter users.

We monitor all accounts for aggressive following and follow churn (repeatedly following and un-following large numbers of other users). You can read more about these below, but if you don’t follow or un-follow hundreds of users in a single day, and you aren’t using automated methods of following users, you should be fine.

That would make more sense.

The Pope's account must've been a "verified" account first, where as @TutuLegacy is not verified by Twitter.

Tutu has not been having a great time since wrestling with God.

TAKE NOTE: Services like Twitter are increasingly becoming a de facto "mouth" for the people in the new global sphere. Please think twice before augmenting your speech ability with crippled and compromised mouths.

but he thinks he is! :D

Anyone recall how years ago if anyone interviewed him - Tutu would go "No! No! He he..(with some crackling laughter), it is not like that!" as if the interviewer were the most stupid person in the world! :o
