Does anyone know why Vodacom does not have a Twitter short code... all of Vodafone Uk, Germany and New Zealand do so why not South Africa?.... or am I missing something?:cry:
 
Correction, Twitter does not have a South African shortcode - not symantics but correction.

Shortcodes are rated R1-R50 in South Africa (you also get reverse charge but that would be too expensive for twitter as they have the bear the cost).

Thanks for the input... are we saying that the Vodacom shortcode rates are more expensive than the Vodafone rates in the UK, Germany and New Zealand? ... seems to me that offering this feature would be a marketing plus for Vodacom, or a negative if one of the competitors gets there first

On second thoughts with smartphones who needs sms when there is Jabber, Fring, Nimbuzz, Gtalk, Mxit ... it goes on... and there are Twitter clients for S60, Android, iPhone and Windows Mobile

The shortcode mechanism is across all networks and only a few are network dependant (these are for special network information services and are often cost-free to the consumer).

It would be great if Twitter could operate locally as in other markets but a real world implementation here is going to be a big task: Hardware investment; application development; management; etc ...

The real hurdle here is the cost of distributing the tweets via SMS (MT) as local SMS costing is not cheap even when your buying 10 million a month. (Google make use of an external provider to save cash and certain networks block these requests).

The cost of updating via shortcode SMS (MO) is for the consumers account and here free SMSs do not count even if the shortcode was nominal rated (about 75c). There is a long detailed explanation somewhere on MyBB that explains this.
