Cape Town - Controversial columnist David Bullard has been suspended from popular social network Twitter.

When visiting Bullard’s Twitter page, https://twitter.com/lunchout2, the message “Account suspended” is displayed.

Bullard was in the news in February this year when he became embroiled in a Twitter war with activist and journalist Michelle Solomon on the topic of rape.

His views caused an outcry in the South African Twittersphere and were condemned by a number of commentators and journalists.

In April, Bullard sued the Mail & Guardia for R16m for alleged defamation after columns critical of his conduct and Twitter postings were published on their blog site Thought Leader.

Bullard was fired as a Sunday Times columnist in 2008 after the newspaper published his column - Uncolonised Africa wouldn’t know what it was missing - which it subsequently described as racist and insulting to black people. Bullard sued for unfair dismissal.

When contacted by News24, Bullard said via e-mail that the operative word is suspended, and he should be back on Twitter in a few days.

"I didn't receive any advance warning, but that's not really surprising with the world on high alert against cyber terrorism," he said.

Bullard said he thinks he knows why his account was suspended, but is waiting for confirmation from Twitter.

IMO Bullard was suspended mainly for his uncouth rape jokes.

I would be surprised if Twitter lets him back, partly based on their age policy of 13 years old. His posts are just not appropriate.

I used to enjoy reading some of his columns, but they did seem to gradually go out of whack.

Clearly his fight with the Sunday Times caused some difficulties for him, he has been getting progressively more smutty since then.

Suing the M&G seems to be quite daring, he could lose a massive amount in paying for the legal costs for both parties.

When people start describing someone who had a drunken roll in the hay as "a survivor", jokes are appropriate. Grow up society.

I suspect that a very high percentage of rape cases have an element of alcohol/drugs. By either/both parties.

Do you want to disqualify the majority of rape cases because of this ?

And then the culpable homicide cases. Jub-jub, for example.

And then the murder cases, etc.

Where do you stop ?

I was talking about people having drunken sex. Why bring rape into it ?

You know something obvious about life ? Apparently not so let me tell you.

Fact 1 : People (women as much as men) really like to have sex. For some strange reason probably related to the immense pleasure they derive from it this just happens to be a fact. Only social inhibition stops society from turning into one massive on going roman orgy.

Fact 2 : Alcohol lowers your inhibitions. When they are lowered you are more likely to engage in things you WANT TO DO.

Fact 3 : After the effects of the alcohol have worn off your superego might dose you with a little guilt. Especially when you have just shagged your friends boyfriend. Backed up by a society so pushing the idea down your throat that as a woman you are always a constant victim, you might then find it convenient to decide this was some form of "rape". Even though in fact you probably enjoyed it (ooh taboo!). But let's manufacture a crime anyway ?

But lets get back on topic. Why was Bullard suspended ?

IMO it is because his crude rape jokes are inappropriate for Twitter, which has very young members. I believe that they have taken the 13 year old age restriction out of their T&C, so 8 to 10 year old kids would also see these jokes.

This just won't fly, especially in the USA.

And his crude Avatar certainly didn't help.

you know what also isn't good for the young mind ? Perpetuating the idea that somehow days even after the fact, rape is something that a person can feel ambivalent about. And therefore at the subjective whim of a woman.

I think if rape was a crime that lived up to it's hyped up status as "one of the worst things that can happen to a person" then it really shouldn't take days to notice that something "horrific" has happened to you. And if it does then either rape isn't as bad as we're being told, or it is and the type of "rape" she is talking about really doensn't deserve the same level of concern.

In fact probably when the young ones become sexually active they ought to be discouraged to engage in drunken sex rather than as females be told they have a fail safe to fall back on : crying wolf...sorry I mean rape....if they do get caught out in it.

It's not like a woman sleeping around a lot even bothers anyone anymore. Not me anyway. That would be really sexist if anyone thought like that. Maybe that's the real elephant in the room ? This liar...sorry lady...felt the need to throw some guy under the bus because she felt some guilt about being a slut ? To the extent she cried rape ?

Or is she just really a horrible and vindictive attention seeking sociopath ?

For some clarity on my position :

Rape (as most people perceive it) is rightly thought of a horrific crime. Nobody should ever dare think they have any business invading anothers space unless invited, especially in the realms of physical contact. This is the most simple of libertarian principles. A world gone savage would be on where we had any tolerance for this.

What I see here is a manipulation and abuse of this premise (just read her own account of events). A stretching out of the concept into murky water. A borrowing of a legitimate social concern for personal vendetta or agenda. It diminishes the real victims of actual rape and if this is allowed to set a precedent then far more harm would be done than good.

The histrionics of feminism are spreading very thin and if not tempered by some personal responsibility by women a backlash from men is inevitable. The reality of the world is that the imaginary world of oppression that feminists dream up can become reality the moment men actually desire it. It is men and only men who stop the oppression of women by men. Certainly we can be coerced and guided by our good nature and sense of fair play into altering our bad behavior. But don't push us into a corner and smear us with your man hate. Our fair play is conditional. We expect you to play fair too. We do make up the most powerful and intelligent group of people on the planet. Currently our hubris is all about equality and liberalism. But that can only last up to a point that we ourselves are feeling threatened. Then....backlash.

He made jokes about a person who had a drunk bonk then came on the internet presenting her self as a "rape survivor". Setting about to milk the teat of white knights and misguided professional victims everywhere. Jokes about such people are hardly crude.

His recent tweets were about Conrad Kock/Chester Missing being an *******. I agree with him.

I don't think this was the reason though. His profile picture was a naked woman holding his book. This probably got him suspended. Ironic considering the amount of porn on Twitter.

No, his main offence was the crude and vulgar rape jokes that he published.

I'm sure that's what Twitter thought, anyway.

That sort of stuff he can go and publish on his own blog, not on a public forum.

Most likely for his crude rape jokes ?

No. At the request of Solomon and her libtard followers. From her FB page ( currently she has this offline but I have the page saved ) drumming up support for her crap:

I'm reporting David Bullard again for his ongoing harassment and threats against me. I seriously can't take it anymore. Please, please help me by reporting him for abusive behaviour and harassment.
In the section of the report to Twitter where they ask to describe his actions in more detail, feel free to post the following:
"David Bullard has been using the above named account to harass rape survivor and activist Michelle Solomon (@mishsolomon) for months. He accuses her of lying about her rape, calls her insane and threatens to use spurious court action to harass her further. Despite Solomon having blocked him, his abuse continues, and every time he @mentions her his followers troll her account, and have called he a slut, a whore, sent her pornographic images and accuse her of lying about being raped. Bullard has been harassing Solomon since at least February, and Has been reported him multiple times, and Twitter has done nothing to curb his abuse. His abuse of Solomon made national news in South Africa: http://www.iol.co.za/news/crime-courts/bullard-slammed-over-rape-talk-tweet-1.1642355#.VFntE_Fdac1
Please suspend account @lunchout2 and make this abuse stop."
Please share this status and encourage others to report him. Please.

No. Twitter is a private business and it can censor what it wants and suspend the account of anybody it deems is breaching their Terms of Service. A public forum with a different policy, probably only well known place left is 2chan as 4chan is now censored by moot (so much for free speech there), would work. I don't know of any English forums which tolerate all sorts of free speech, perhaps 8chan?

What Bullard could do is create a website on a host which will guarantee freedom of speech, and such a host would probably have to be hosted in Russia or some other such ex-USSR republic where laws are more lax, (as long as he avoids criticising Russia, or said country, he'll be OK). Some hosts in Sweden also allow free speech to a degree of course. Switzerland may be another option.

Not sure that this would have been enough.

His own posts and avatar would have been the deciding factors when Twitter went through his account.

The Michelle Solomon bunch are claiming the "win"

I'm sure his avatar did not help when Twitter looked at the account
