Cape Town - Controversial columnist David Bullard has been suspended from popular social network Twitter.
When visiting Bullard’s Twitter page, https://twitter.com/lunchout2, the message “Account suspended” is displayed.
Bullard was in the news in February this year when he became embroiled in a Twitter war with activist and journalist Michelle Solomon on the topic of rape.
His views caused an outcry in the South African Twittersphere and were condemned by a number of commentators and journalists.
In April, Bullard sued the Mail & Guardia for R16m for alleged defamation after columns critical of his conduct and Twitter postings were published on their blog site Thought Leader.
Bullard was fired as a Sunday Times columnist in 2008 after the newspaper published his column - Uncolonised Africa wouldn’t know what it was missing - which it subsequently described as racist and insulting to black people. Bullard sued for unfair dismissal.
When contacted by News24, Bullard said via e-mail that the operative word is suspended, and he should be back on Twitter in a few days.
"I didn't receive any advance warning, but that's not really surprising with the world on high alert against cyber terrorism," he said.
Bullard said he thinks he knows why his account was suspended, but is waiting for confirmation from Twitter.
