Two police officers are due in court on Thursday charged with killing the Elliotdale police station commander, Eastern Cape police said.

"A 41-year-old warrant officer and a 37-year-old female constable, both stationed at Elliotdale police station, will appear in court on a charge of murder," spokeswoman Brigadier Marinda Mills said in a statement.

The two were arrested on December 31. On that day two men appeared in the Elliotdale Magistrate's Court charged with the same crime.

Sipho Simon Makhabeni, 46, and Siyamcela Nt****shi, 33, would remain in custody until their next appearance on January 7.

Lt-Col Nomalizo Dukumbane, 53, was shot from behind on the doorstep of her Elliotdale home as she returned from work at 7.40pm on December 17. She died on the scene.

Dukumbane served in the SA Police Service for more than 30 years.
