Hi,

I gather that quite a few people have a ISP who they have a monthly subscription with. In addition they may use the WebAfrica "pay as you go" faciltiy to see them over to the start of the next month once they have reached thier cap from thier normal ISP.

This is something I want to do also, but am not sure how people do this in terms of setting up 2 accounts. Also do you choose - once you have your two accounts set up - when you switch your router on, which account to log into? Could this be influenced by what type of router I have?

As I am not very technical  I would appreciate beginner type feedback. Thanks so much.

If you're asking if you will receive two accounts from Web Africa.. the prepaid data gets added to your existing account. So you only have one account which you use/setup as per normal.

Edit: I see you mention two different ISP's in the topic.

I have numerous accounts setup in my router. The username and password is saved in FireFox's password manager, so I just type the first few letters of whichever account I wish to connect with and it autocompletes the rest. Basic, but it does the job. No other settings on the router change.

You know if this works with opera?

I think he is referring to changing the router account and reconnecting - and yes, that will work in Opera.

What the original poster wants, I think, is two connections at the SAME time, with routing set up.

If your modem is running in "router" mode the only way to change the account would be to configure the modem itself. Depending on the model of your modem it might support multiple accounts but you'd have to find out more about setting that up from your modem manual or whatever.

You might find account switching easier if you configure your router to run in "modem" mode. You'd then set up 2 'dial up' connections to connect to your 2 ISPs. So depending on which ISP you'd want to connect to you'd simply connect via that particular connection, similar to the way a regular dial up modem works.

You might find the following link useful if you want to be able to connect to both ISPs at once and route local traffic through the one and international traffic through the other: http://mybroadband.co.za//vb/showthread.php?t=39234

It "should" work in any browser with autocomplete/password storing.. :D

Thanks

Firstly thanks for so many quick and helpful replies.

I was hoping no-one was going to ask about the make!! I am at work now, and am not too sure about make, but can answer that mid afternoon. I do remember that when it was installed the tech guy said something about putting the password into the router software (hope that makes sense). When I switch my router on, I am connected to the net - I do not have any passwords etc to do first.

I would not want to connect to both accounts at the same time. At present I have a IS based account, but due to some times when there are problems, I want a SAIX back up (hence WA pay as you go option). If IS is playing up, I would then just switch to SAIX.

Antibody I have read about your Route Sentry and that might become an option later.

Hope this helps.

Your ADSL router/modem would have come with documentation stating how to change the ADSL Username and Password. Usually this is done via a web browser like Internet Explorer or Firefox.

You normally type in the IP address of your router into your address bar. Eg. http://192.168.0.1/. You should then be prompted for a username and password. The username/password should be in the documentation that came with your router. If you do not know the u/p, there is a 'Reset' button on the router which will cause it to use all default settings. After resetting the router, the default u/p, which is in the documentation, can be used.

Beware though that this will cause all your current settings to be deleted. You will have to enter it again. Reset should be your last resort!!

I cannot agree more - please do not reset the router unless you know what you are doing! If you do not know, please make sure someone else does - I had to help a friend correct this very problem today - damned annoying..

Thanks Andres101, I will not try that myself. I have spoken to the people I bought my Microcom router from and they are going to help me. I do appreciate the help, but do think that this is beyond my limited challenged skill level ;)

I am going to keep this thread on hand as I always think it is good to have a few ideas / options so do appreciate the help.

Seems my router handles both modes simultaneously - when I feel the need for speed ;) I use a pppoe connection direct from the computer that needs it while the others trundle away in the usual way.

Details and an explanation from Carlhead here - http://www.mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=45031 (from post 13)
