Hi guys, I'm currently scouting for cars and need some input. I can realistically afford everything up to R200k, whereafter it becomes tricky. I'd generally want new, but if someone can make a convincing argument to buy COTY 1993 then that's that.

My argument for a two door car is that I'm never going to use anything but the driver door; if I felt safe on a bike, I would have bought one. I see no need to pay for the back seats, boot space, extra steel or more difficulty in parking. The utility of this car is getting to work and back. Nothing more, nothing less.

Most of the A segment has four doors, but ideally it would only have two - but that's just the way the cookie crumbles sometimes.

I dunno guys, help? Do I go with something sporty like the Polo Vivo GT (I've heard some not so great things about the Vivo) or 2-door Opel Corsa (base model). Or a fully kitted out i10 (safe choice?)? Realistically it needs to be an upgrade on my Hyundai Access CS 1997 in terms of luxury, which isn't difficult.

We have a 2013 Alfa Mito TCT sitting here for under 200k - lovely car to drive if you want to enjoy driving! :)

Definitely try the Corsa Colour Edition. They go for R200,600 new but since its GMSA you are dealing with you will be able to wangle a much sweeter dealer. You will also get a lot more car for your money than with any other German option and the ride quality will be more substantial than Korean options.

Blasphemer. Also, Polo Vivo GT sporty my ass. You can dress a pig in heels and makeup, but it's still a pig.

Now that we've got that out of the way:

Nice car, but depreciation says no. Unless OP doesn't care about that, in which case it's worth a look. MUCH better the i10/Polo Vivo/Corsa OP was considering initially.

Citroen DS3 bud....

Funky, but french (and a Citroen even!) so no.

Definitely try the Corsa Colour Edition.

It's a Corsa, your argument is invalid.

Get something second hand, low mileage and exciting. If it has remainder of motor plan, even better! What about a Civic Type R?

This is quite nice. Have dealt with that dealer before too, good service.

Negotiate a bit and get this, even better than above.

No idea why people would want to bore themselves to death with a ****box. Small, cheap, reliable, fuel efficient, bleh. Compromise a bit on all these points and get something that isn't just mundane.

The Polo Vivo GT is just a normal Vivo with bigger wheels and some stickers, it's a waste of money really. It's not available yet, but have you looked at the new i10?

If you can stomach the styling of the Honda then perhaps it is an option, although I would not recommend buying a performance car second hand.

Between the Mito, Corsa and Civic, I'd take the Mito.

Suzuki swift 1.4 gls with a 5year Maintenance plan for under R185k - or you could a 1year old demo sport model with a service plan for just under R200k - either that Or I would go for the Mito

Somewhat off topic, but where have all the cheap 2 door cars gone? Most of the entry level cars used to have this option.

If you want a 2 door get a 2 door - I personally prefer them, space wise they about the same as equivalent 4 door only reason i want a 4 door is a little difficult with the car seat - had experience with my old 2 door civic and the baby seat.
With regard to the Polo Vivo GT - its not worth it don't bother (and I'm a VW fan) - its not sporty just Looks sporty

From the price range and cars you mentioned i assume you buying new?
Although a 4 door the Kia Rio 1.4 tec Man should set you back just shy of 200K

Only in Europe are two (three) door options cheaper. You get 3 door Golfs, Astras, Focus' and many more for cheaper than the larger 5 door options.

For some odd reason they are more expensive in SA. A good example is the Corsa-D range, the Essentia (5 door) is much cheaper than the Colour Edition (3 door) yet they have the same trim, spec level and engine. I think only car range where the 3 door is still the cheapest is the Polo Vivo, but honestly, wie-wou 'n ou Polo hê?
