Yeah, I remember it... And so was I. I don't like watching/hearing about things like that, drives me crazy. Which is why, while I can support the death penalty for murderers and rapists, I find it incredibly difficult to accept "whatever goes, as long as they end up dead" as an acceptable moral course.

How do they go about testing these drugs for approval?

Probably initially on lab animals that have served their purpose or animals in need of euthanasia and then they monitor the effects. I'm sure they have their ways.

Not a fan of the death penalty - although some of the crimes committed these days make me forget reason and logic - but why can't they produce their own pentobarbital if they insist on using it?

Surely they would just redo the execution? Or does that equal to when the rope would snap and that would give you a pardon or something?

Nothing like claiming to be civilised, follow some sort of superior moral integrity when it suits you and then shrug it all off and say, "Screw it, let them suffer" when it doesn't.

The idea, obviously lost on some, is to be "better" than the criminals and not sink to their level. I guess some of us don't have it in us to be better than them, we just managed to live on the opposite side of the fence so far.

To be honest I'm tired of "us" trying to be better than "them". Because we are so concerned about criminals feelings they get to leach of society for years, taking money that could be used to better society. If they are guilty of those horrible crimes their feelings should be the last thing on our minds.

Kill them with rusty needles for all I care.

It is impossible to be 100% certain in ALL cases. The important thing about humanity and civilised society is to not become the criminal. That means if you are going to perform the death penalty in your society that you do so in the most humane way possible.

That they couldn't grant their victims the same courtesy is not the point, "we" are not "them" that's WHY we, at the very least, execute them humanely.

Otherwise where do you draw the line? Is stoning acceptable? Or is that too barbaric?

You do not behave in the same way as criminals otherwise you become the criminal.

Oh, we are very much them and no mistake. The only difference between a violent murderer and the rest of us is that we like to do our killing out of outrage and indignation and from a safe and sanitised distance.

Yeah, yeah. This is what I'm talking about. Do you think you have it in you to actually kill a human being? I sincerely doubt it. Ask any combat soldier how much killing an enemy soldier left them unscarred and unmoved. Killing is a traumatic and damaging experience for normal people. I can only chuckle at the armchair executioners who are so blase about the death penalty. As long as it's someone else flipping the switch.

The death penalty has zero affect on violent crime. It's simply revenge.
