Two-hour Reddit outage caused by subreddits going dark in API fee protest

It is sad how all these online social community services are kicking third-party apps to the curb. Twitter, dead. Facebook, dead. Now Reddit.

Third-party apps can still display ads, should it be enabled, but some third-party apps have a way better user experience and not only optimised, but customisable experience.

It is also BS that digital marketplaces remove the apps at request. They should leave it there, but deem it incompatible.

In my view, they should work with third-party developers to implement standards rather than to make them pay an unreasonable toll. In the end, it is the end-user paying the price.

Ad Blockers and apps without forces more ads onto others. It is corruption, the few paying for the many.

What is so wrong with the app?
Christiaan from Apollo and Spuz have both handled the situation badly. Both are wrong

It is clunky as hell for starters, then every fourth item is an advert, has a screwed up way of presenting articles which loses half of them, because some idiot algorythum desides you get to see what it thinks is "hot" "controversial" etc.

Third party app creators aren't against paying for APIs but their model which they want to implement is a clear message that they want to force third party apps to close down. I have been using Relay for Reddit for about 6 or 7 years. Reddit is driven by community, kick the community to the curb and they will leave. Then with no content being created you have no platform. Look what happened to Digg, Tumblr, almost imgr, probably a few other examples.

Thier new site is rubbish, their app is rubbish. Thats why people use third party apps and old.reddit.com

I also have no issues with their "crappy" app.

What did the 3rd party devs do wrong? They simply said they can’t pay the fees so they are shutting down.

So you want communism, someone else pays for a service you dont want to. Be it in money or viewing adverts.

The 3rd party apps blocked adverts and revenue, that is pretty problematic. As I said in my original quote. Both the app guys and Reddit handled it badly, both are in the wrong. But Reddit is first a business.

Old vs New is maybe an opinion, but what has this got to do with the shutdown?
Their app is fine, at least the iOS one. But why is it rubbish in your eyes? It works?

Reddit are too useless and incompetent to take what makes the other apps better than theirs, and compete with them, nope that is to much effort, easier to kill of that which is putting their current app to shame.
