No-one ever said criminals were bright... or particularly clued up on firearms safety :p
 
It was probably a LEGAL gun before it was stolen by the police when it was handed in.

Or it was perfectly legal when it was in use by the police/army. Amazing how many stories mention Z88s as the weapon of choice.
 
The Vektor Z88 is a South African made copy of the Beretta 92. They were originally put into production due to sanctions during the old Apartheid era - no-one wanted to sell us weapons, so we made our own. It's a pretty decent gun, actually, and was issued as the standard military and police handgun. You'll still see a lot of them in the holsters of cops nowadays, along with a few Stars and the occasional Vektor SP1 - an evolution on the Z88.
