I have a windows workstation.. it has two network cards in. The one network card is attached to our work LAN.. and gets its internet through there. Sometimes I use my second network card if I have to interface with servers or IP`s on a different LAN.

Now say I have my normal connection to my LAN.. and I add an ADSL router to the second network card and start a PPP connection.

Which path will interface will windows use to connect to the internet? The most recently created one? Or the original connection?

Actually the short answer to your original question is
Which path will interface will windows use to connect to the internet? The most recently created one? Or the original connection?
*And this is as far as I remember the silliness of windows and multiple network connections*

The last one that gets connected

So unplug cable 2 or disable it and enable just before establishing a connection

You need to configure your routing to do this - open up a command prompt and type

route print

You'll see a list of all routes (i.e. network destinations) - using various commands you can "set" your Windows to use one connection for internet access and another for specific IP ranges (such as your work VPN).

I used to set up internet access via my 3G card and work via my network adapter in my notebook while at a client using nothing but ROUTE commands. :)

An easy thing to try is: go to your "Network Connections" (assuming you are using Win XP). Go to Advanced, Advanced Settings. You'll see a list of all your adapters at the top. Here you can move adapters around - the ones topmost will be the one Windows tries first to resolve an address. So if your work isn't connected to the internet and has specific IP ranges, you can move your network card connected to the ADSL router to the top. When trying to access your work addresses (usually a private IP range), it will ignore the top adapter and try the second one - your work one. If it is a public, internet address, it will try from top down (thus the ADSL connected card first) and most likely find it first, thus ignoring your work card.

Interesting.
I must try this .. once I get ADSL again ..

Wiz .. is he right?

Im at home now.. I can check tomorrow only :D

I hope he is.

He is correct because every connection that connects overwrites the previous connection's default route.
