Hi all,

I'm about to get a second line installed. My existing line is already provides broadband to my property via a DSL Modem / Router.

If I have my new line enabled for broadband, install another DSL Modem / Router, and connect these two routers together with ethernet cable will I get twice the speed (i.e. 2 x 1.5 MBPS = 3 MBPS) ?

Thanks!

don't lie boramk

The lines allow for much more than double the speed

You will get about 3 times the speed

How will you load balance the two lines? Do your routers support bonding, and your ISP as well?

Most modems have rubber feet so they're stackable - will only overbalance if you have more than four.
Make sure you use a good cable organiser.

lol dai.hop i dont think that is possible it is two diff lines right? so thats exactly what you will get 2 diiff lines..

Dai.hop - Project X has called our bluff and the game's over. All the answers above are ragz.

You're a newbie to MyBB, so welcome! You've already exprienced the quick-draw fast-shootin' answers typical of this place. But there are also kinder, gentler neigbourhoods on MyBB.

Honest answer to your Q: unless you get really fancy (and expensive) DSL modems, and your ISP supports technology to aggregate the single incoming streams down two separate DSL lines, the answer is no.

Think about it for a mo: how will your ISP know to send the web page from say the mbb website to two separate ADSL accounts and their associated lines and IP addresses? Can be done, of course, but it needs fancy equipment and software ... bonding and load balancing thingies.

Its not that straightforward...you need loadbalancing etc like Nod said.

The dudes are just playing with you.

There are hardware out there that will do it for you. The Fortigate products comes to mind. A bit expensive for home use.

I suggest the following.... Get a old pc, and install 3 network cards. 2 x WAN and 1 x LAN. Install pfsense (opensource based on freeBSD) and configure the load balancing and failover. It works for me.

(There seems to be different interpretations of the term "load balancing" :D )

Say your pc has a 2 ethernet ports? And you plug each one into another router (Each router connects on a different line) Will you have 2 lines connected and thus twice the bandwidth?

Because I see a lot of new mobos have 2 ethernet ports

You would still have to config loadbalancing...windows doesn't see 2 connections and automagically decide to load balance. Something like this:

You'd also run into problems with some forums that bail if the IP changes...which will happen unless the lines are bonded.

just use 2 pc's for downloading, or one for DL and one for surfing/playing games.

no fancy equipment needed, and you will have 2x the speed.

agreed, I mean, unless you heavy into your movie Dl's(WHICH IS BAD) you won't "need" a faster line, and with a 1.5mb/s line for gaming, thats pretty ownage IMO,
