Two Major, one possible illegal, ADSL problems.

1) When I got ADSL installed by a Telkom Tech. They installed special Dial-up software...Without telling us that this was optional. Hmm, turns out that the software leaves it's gateways unprotected, and 3 minutes after having ADSL installed, my entire Windows OS was corrupt with so many worms, it would take ages to name them all. Funny how as soon as I decided to use connect to Telkom directly through my router, the flow of worms and viruses stopped, especially with the software uninstalled.

2) The usage tracker seems to add a about hundred megs of data randomly. My PC was actually unable to use the internet for a few days, when I finally got my internet up and running, my Usage Tracker informed me that I had download 700 or so megs...Impossible.

I went away for the weekend - Turned my PC's off - but left the ADSL router and my hub running - According to http://adsl.telkomsa.net/ my ADSL clocked 200Megs without even anything running ???

Or maybe my hub was trying to download some movies - yeah right!

Watch this space - there's going to be big unhappyness if I hit my 3GB cap. I don't play online games and I don't download junk - I fall perfectly into Telkom's "average user" classification - so if they even try to tell me that I used 3GB it'll be blatant fraud!

I received the same complaint from many members through e-mail. Unfortunately I receive no feedback from Telkom after numerous letters, phone calls and e-mails. I will give them a few ore days, but then I guess we will have to involve third parties like the media again to get a response.

It is truly sad that we are simply ignored. We are, after all, paying their salaries!

Vamp, I would imagine that is why they dish out Nortons with their PPoE client. The fact is if you have their cleint running and have no firewall you are a sitting duck. The unwary user WILL soon be hacked. As far as security goes running a router without their PPoE client gives a good first level 'firewall'. It blocks incoming ports and only passes packets through if you specificaly allow them. But, and here is the Rub, it requires far more support and understanding.

Installing the client is dead easy, I would imagine that is why Telkom does it by default.

Guess what happened yesterday... I actually did download - quite a bit (maybe about 100MB or more) - and the http://adsl.telkomsa.net/ report shows only about 10MB.

This is so frustrating, because us little people have no way of making Telkom "do the right thing". What we need is ADSL Police []
