Two North West policemen have been arrested for corruption and robbery, police said on Tuesday.

The two, aged 29 and 33, allegedly entered two tuck-shops on Monday and demanded money from the owners, Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said.

"They allegedly told them [the shop owners] that they are from Potchefstroom and doing a random check for illicit cigarettes."

In the first robbery, they searched a shop and found five boxes of illicit cigarettes. They then demanded R1000 from the shop owner.

A friend of the owner took down the police vehicle registration number and alerted the authorities.

The two policemen then entered a second shop and demanded money.

They took two boxes of cigarettes and R200, said Ngubane.

They were later arrested in Mahikeng, and would appear in the Itsoseng Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
