Two quick questions

Hey guys,

I decided to buy WOW. It's just been sitting on my desk for some time now.

I'd like to ask two questions:

1. Will the account (or whatever it's called) expire if I have not installed and used the game after a certain time?

2. Is a Vodacom HSDPA connection good enough to play it on, how much bandwidth does it use? Is it better to use ADSL?

My ADSL is down at the moment, so I'm using 3G.

Thanks guys.

1. No. The gametime only starts running down once you have loaded it onto an account.
2. Yes, you can even play on gprs. Just as long as you don;t get too many lag spikes where the game actually hangs because of slow through-put you will be ok. Any connection will work as long as you can keep the latency under 1000 ms you'll do fine while leveling.

It depends how lucky you are with the connection really. You may have a good connection for months, then wham! lag spikes, dc's et al. It's also very dependant on number of users on that tower at the time. Try switching between MTN and Vodacom sims until feelings of suicide or manslaughter take hold, then switch to ADSL.

It uses anything from 5 to 10 meg's an hour.

Uses 5-20mb/h yeah. But also keep in mind the game-patches can be huge. Patching from a vanilla install to latest version will probably be around 1-2gb's, and the new 3.1 patch coming out in the next few weeks also looks like it'll be around a gig.

Best to get the game-files from someone if you can.

Ok, thanks guys. Do I have to patch it to be able to play?

Yep. Also, what exactly did you buy? Wow has two expansions now, so make sure you have those for access to all the content.

Velenoso, here is a tip. Go sign up for the free wow trial. It gives you 10 days of gametime. Then upgrade that trial account by entering the key you got with your copy of wow. That way you get to play for 40 days instead of 30 :D

Do the 30/40 days count irregardless of whether I'm playing or not? i.e. do you get 30 x 24 hours? Or 30 days from day of sign up independent of actual game time? If the latter is the case, then I will rather wait to sign up when I got a bit more free time.

The one I bought is just says World of Warcraft on the front. The front of the pack sort of folds open and there are two scary looking bastards in there.

I'm quite excited. From what I've read, this is awesome stuff.

Once your account has been created, i.e you enter your serial key and it's made, your game time starts ticking. It works from date to date, so it's irrespective of the amount of time you spend on it

Grats on your purchase :D I would do as others suggest and enter one of the trial keys when u first sign up, so u can get the extra 10 days... gives u a bit of time to find yr feet in the dangerous new world u are entering :p As others have said, u will unfortunately need to patch 1 - 2 Gb worth to get going from a vanilla disc install, what I would suggest is looking elsewhere on these forums for the guy who is running the pre-TBC guild and getting with him and join their server as u will find a lot of ppl doing original WoW content and happy to help, which will give u a richer experiance in the game. He will also be able to help u with patches, as he will have the game patched same as what u will need.

Just a note on internet... I started on 3G HSDPA/GPRS and while u are lvling its great. Once u start to do raids and other group things it becomes more iffy, but still doable on 3G. Endgame stuff u pretty much need yr ADSL for the stability (I havent looked back since I got it :D) but thats a way off for u, so go out there and get with a grp that is busy with yr kind of content and enjoy yr game. The best thing abt it is the social aspect, it enriches the experience so much more than just soloing stuff.
