Hi guys,

I need new tyres for my Volvo S40 T5 Automatic, it still has the tyres that came with it when I bought it second hand which are Yokohama 225/45ZR17 94W.

Does anyone have any recommendations for tyres?

One place quoted me R841.11 each for Falken ZE912. I've been told the Falken's aren't good and are cheap imports though? Does anyone have experience with them?

Other quotes I've had are:
  • Michelin 225/45R17 91Y Pilot Sport 3 @ R1490.35 a tyre
  • Pirelli 225/45R17 91W P-Zero Rosso AO @ R1399.12 a tyre
  • Continental 225/45R17 91W Sport Cont 3 MO @ R1486.84 a tyre
  • Dunlop 225/45R17 SP7000 @ R980 a tyre
  • Goodyear 225/45R17 EfficientGrip @ R1485 a tyre
  • Firestone 225/45R17 91W TZ700 @ R1831 a tyre

Thanks in advance,
David

P.S. I'm in Cape Town so recommendations should be local ;)

Pzero rosso for grip
Continental sport contact 3 for durability
Michelin pilot sport 3 I think for balance

Not a fan of the others

F1 eagle will be 2k+ easy

The only ones I would go for are these:
Michelin 225/45R17 91Y Pilot Sport 3 @ R1490.35 a tyre
Pirelli 225/45R17 91W P-Zero Rosso AO @ R1399.12 a tyre
You can not put a price on your family's safety. I have had enough experience with a wide variety passenger tyres to know what is best for me and my family. Both these will give you great grip in the wet. It also give great mileage. The first time I tried Pirellis on my car was on a BMW 320d - I was amazed at the quite ride coming from Bridgestones. The grip was way better and I felt much more confident driving around in both dry and wet weather - especially wet weather. The rie is softer than the Bridgestones, but it felt like the car was on rails. A mate of mine swore by Michelins and so the first time I tried Michelins on my car was on a new A4 2.0 TDi (which replaced the BMW). Very much the same as the Pirellis, but it has always been more expensive. The only area where I would say it is better than the Pirellis, was perhaps mileage - but that has changed over the years. Whenever I purchase a new car, I insist they put on Michelins or Pirellis or else I will go elsewhere.

On the others:
Continental 225/45R17 91W Sport Cont 3 MO @ R1486.84 a tyre - Hate Conti's - but if you like drifting in light rain get these
Dunlop 225/45R17 SP7000 @ R980 a tyre - Only for people with no friends or family and has a tendency to commit suicide
Goodyear 225/45R17 EfficientGrip @ R1485 a tyre - Okay, but at this price, you won't get anything better than the Pirellis/Michelins. If it is locally made, stay away! (see Firestone comment about curing)
Firestone 225/45R17 91W TZ700 @ R1831 a tyre - I think I swallowed a bit of vomit... Stay away especially if it is locally made. The local manufactured Firestones does not get cured properly like the overseas counterparts. They are in my experience very inconsistent and I hated every one of the 190kms I did on them until I replaced them - most of those kms were to swop them around to get the car to go straight.

Lies, I've been using sport contact 3 for years, it handles really well in the wet. Only problem is you never know if you getting a local one or one from Germany (local quality isn't as good as the German ones). Also quite a noisy tyre due to the hard compound used.

I'd go for the Michelin though, pity they weren't that cheap when I replaced mine.

The Falken453's are a good cheap tyre if you want to save, their extreme cold weather performance is not fantastic though.

Also be sure to use Errols.co.za, they are considerably cheaper than fitment centres for the rubber with free delivery to a fitment centre

I have driven a fair amount of KM in that specific model.

I would recommend the Pirelli or the Michelin tires. 1st choice. Maybe look at the Bridgestone tires awell. That size is cheaper that your quoted prices.

If you are looking to save a bit of cash. And you do not drive the hell out of the car.

The Dunlops are fair value for money. They will also last longer. They are going to be a step down from the Yoko's.

Make sure you get the CORRECT load rate tires.

Good year Eagle F1 Asymmetrical or Michelin Pilot Sport 3, thank me later.

I have the Eagle F1s on my Accord and they're everything a good tyre should be, full of grip in the dry and wet, quiet and long-lasting. The PS3s are also a great option from what I've read.

Also Errols tyres should be able to sort you out for a good price.

I can't see how you can go cheap on tires or anything suspension related. The difference between a average and good tire can be making an accident or not.

I run Michelin PS2/PS3, and the grip is extremely good, I have not yet used the brakes so that the ABS kicks in. That is in 2 years time, and I drive pretty fast.

Thanks for all the replies, keep them coming! Seems the Michelin's have the best reviews from people here.

Eroll's is not that cheap from the quick search I did. The best quote on the Michelin's so far is R1299 each from Goodhope Tyres. Eish :/

Did you have any problems with the Yokohamas?

Why not go for a set of them again?

I didn't have any problems with them. Trying to maybe get something that costs a bit less, the Yokohama's are quite pricey...

I absolutely hate Dunlops after I got bubbles on 2 of my new tyres on my previous car. Also my bike has Dunlop Cheesemax's on it and they are almost done! Only 4000km on the bike at the moment. So from the list I would love the Michelin's and the Pirelli's. I currently have Hankook Ventus V12 EVO's on my car and they are great for wet and dry weather. Wear a bit quickly though as I will have to replace them within the next 10000km or so, only done 40 000km on the set so far.

I know Tiger Wheel and Tyre has a special on the Yokohama A-Drives at the moment. Also worth a look as they came in cheaper than the Hankook's when I enquired a week ago. Normally sell for R2800 but R1400 on special for 225/40R18

I agree with you.

But some people have a budget.

Bridgestone MY01 R1340

Bridgestone Potenza R002 Adrenalin R 1178 (great tire). I have run this brand for more than 10 years on various cars and they work very well.

BTW are you looking for comfort or sporty handling?

I made a thread like this last month, and I found that individual opinions were somewhat divided; although in your case the Michelins seem to be winning.

I would recommend looking at these two sites: Note that you should make sure there are enough reviews for the specific tyre you're looking at, as only the more popular models have usable data ( >100 reviews).
http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre-Size/17-Inch-Tyres/225-45-17-Tyres.htm

Having had a quick look at both of the above links myself, I would probably go with the Michelin PS3s. So I guess that's another vote for the Michelins!

  • Michelin 225/45R17 91Y Pilot Sport 3 @ R1490.35 a tyre
  • Pirelli 225/45R17 91W P-Zero Rosso AO @ R1399.12 a tyre
  • Continental 225/45R17 91W Sport Cont 3 MO @ R1486.84 a tyre

Can't go wrong choosing any of these 3.

The Michelin's mentioned above are a speed rating higher than the other 2 tyres. A W rating in the Michelin would be slightly cheaper than the higher spec Y rating.

Damn, forgot about Errols.

Too late now, but wouldn't have worked anyway. Had a blowout on Friday, but in Ballito.

Great reference site, amazed at the small difference in price between normal and runflats.
