Having to fork out on 4 new tyres for my SUV. I know for sure I can't afford top end. So that's easy.
But would appreciate advice on:
1) Any brands that should be avoided at all cost? Why?
2) The best trade-off between quality and price?

Thanks a million.

Buying new tires can be a daunting experience. You face a bewildering array of brands, sizes and tire types to choose from, so it's easy to be confused.

But don't worry: this guide will provide you with the essential facts you need to in order to make the right tire choice for your vehicle at the price you want to pay.

Before you buy, you'll need to know the answers to the following questions:
  • What type of tires does my car need?
  • How many miles will the tires I'm considering last?
  • How much do I want to pay?
  • Should I go with a straight replacement set or upgrade my tires?
Already know about tires and just want our top picks? Our favorites in each category are listed below.

Further down, you'll find more information about all-season, summer, and winter tires plus our top alternative picks in each category.

My personal experience... Firestone. I've fitted them to all my vehicles and never had a problem.
Latest set came with a tire damage guarantee as well..

I put Maxtrek Fortis 5 on my Audi Q5 recently. No complaints and price was good.

Nexen gets my vote. Fitted new to both my Civic and the wife's Q5 last month.
Q5 has 20" wheels, paid less R8k for 4 tyres with fitment, alignment and balance.

Hankook and kumho are good middle ground tyres..
+1

went through multiple Kumho sets in the past and could compare them directly to the factory fitted Bridgestone tyres that came with the cars, Kumho lasted longer, was grippier in the dry, less noisy and much cheaper

I'd add: avoid any brand you've literally never heard of, like Grenlander, even some known brands have questionable tyres (looking at you Falken!)

given the OP mentions an SUV, must say I'm currently very happy with the Yokohama tyres that came with mine, but I'm just guessing they're more in the premium price range than not

Brand is not a tire is not a brand.

Every brand makes ****. Most brand also make decent and then some even make great.

Forget the brands and look at the actual models from each brand FIT FOR PURPOSE.

Expensive isn’t always good. Track tyres are amazing….utterly useless on roads etc.

What size, what use case, and what’s your budget?

I recommend Conti or Michelin, in a pinch Goodyear. Slightly more expensive, but as tires are the thing keeping you on the road, I feel it’s not worth it to skimp.

Check places like Errol’s Tyres, usually have good deals. I’ve ordered from them before, with great success.

Avoid tyres.co.za… that guy is a scam artist. Bought and paid for tires that never arrived. At least I got the money back as I used my CC.

Goodyear and Michelin are the best. Shop around, if you're willing to drive out a bit, you'll find 'township pricing' to be much cheaper than closer to the city or larnie suburbs.

Never skimp on tyres...

You should state if it’s a fast SUV, size of tyre so everyone can give the best recommendation.
Is it a entry level Hyundai or X5 or Range Rover? Each one would need different tyres.

True that. Its a bog standard Diahatsu Terios. No off road. City slicker take the kids to Soccer. A Mr Mom.
Thanks for the amazing advice guys going for the Kumho's and got an amazing deal. R1400 a tyre w free balancing and R250 alignment. All Wheel And Tyre - Goodwood.
Thanks all for the advice and ideas.
