Hi all.

So took my car in for a service this morning to Hyundai and received a call an hour ago stating that my pair of front tyres needs to be replaced as they've been worn to the indicator lines (interestingly I performed my own inspection a few days ago without noticing this). These were new tyres fitted (Khumo) when I bought the car in March and have done 5000km since then so not sure if that wear rate is normal (I consider myself a moderate driver, no burnouts in my i20 )

Regardless I have chosen not to have Hyundai do it due to the excessive price (quoted R2500 for 2 Khumos) as Tyremart has quoted me on 2 Goodyears for 1320 in total including fitment and alignment.

My question is which tyre brand is a safe bet considering Cape Town weather condition and more often less than acceptable roads? Also with regards to comfort, economy and wear?

So far I've had a quote on Goodyears, Firestones (R1600 excluding alignment) and Dunlops (R1560 excluding alignment).

All thoughts, advice and experience appreciated!

5000km?! that's NUTS. You need to have your wheel alignment checked as a matter of urgency if indeed your tyres are worn.

Kumhos are good. I'd pick them over goodyears to be honest.
Try Continentals as well.

Hondnaai tried this with my sisters i10. Claiming the tyres had worn oval. Then the wipers need replacing then this then that. Bloody f88kers

There's no way you wore those tyres out in 5000km, unless you drove like a rally car driver or a drifter.
Also Rouxenator what did you pay for those tyres?

Goodyear is a good tyre. I have no problems with them on all my fleet vehicles.

Pirelli P1 Verde
Michelin Energy Saver Plus
Dunlop SP Sport BluResponse
Continental Premium Contact 5
Goodyear EffiecientGrip Compact
Hankook Kinergy Eco K425
Kumho KH31
Falken ZIEX ZE 914 Ecorun

Unless you've been doing burnouts at every stop there is no way your tyres are worn by 5000km unless there is something very wrong with the suspension but even that would wear the edges and not affect the TWI reading.

They are talking ***.

If anything maybe a rotation is in order but on this vehicle even that would be fine up to 10000km.

I reckon you should see 30k out of a tyre if you do regular rotations and are a sedate driver.

Also have an i20 bought with Kumho tyres. Got a good 73k out of them and only now starting to look to replace as well. 5k...nonsense. As for best brands I'm not sure. I'm actually following comments/advice here as well

I used to only put Pirellis on my cars(VW citi golfs and a vw Beetle). They seemed to last longer than the Goodyears(mercedes benz) I had a couple of years ago. But the merc was a heavy car so might not be the tyre itself.

My new car has Bridgestone Dueller H/T's on. Will see how they last since this is a bigger car.

I also noticed the Pirellis seem to last longer.

I'm quite disappointed by the wear of the Bridgestones I currently have on my car. 18k km and almost time to replace. Grip in the wet is borderline sketchy.

Personally I've found all brands to be good when bought from a reputable place. I always buy what is in stock as I'm no longer brand loyal. I always replace all five tyres at once regardless of condition, even if the spare has never been used as it makes rotation easier. On the wife's Atos with 99% town driving, we get 30'000km with every brand we have tried.

As for Cape Town traffic, well anything with tread is good. Never had an issue in wet weather and I commute from Somerset West to CBD daily on N2. I traded my i10 with 55'000km and it still had it original tyres.

Just rotate them religiously and have your alignment done. Really makes the difference with tyre wear.

Just a word of warning, tyres have a short life even if not on the vehicle. Check the manufacture date and make sure they aren't old. Tyres only are actually safe and their rating is valid for 5yrs. After that they begin to deteriorate (perish/crack).

This is why dealers sell some cheaply in order to move the stock which is old let alone bought at a few years ago's prices.
