Tyre Brands

Interesting valid point but a lot of those statements where made in the 80's/90's when tyre technology was way different to today's. Michellan for example recommends replacement after 5 years of fitment or 10 years from manufacturing, whichever comes first.

EDIT: In OPs case I don't think he would get a chance to have these for more than 5 months :)

Hi all.

Thanks for the great advice. By my own measurements it would seem that I have about 2 to 3 mm of tread left on the tyre (according to the Arrive Alive website a minimum of 1mm is allowed before considered a risk for aquaplaning on wet roads).

As mentioned above I may have to check the manufacture date of the tire but I believe I may have not had brand new tyres on the the car when purchased (Hyundai Milnerton loves their joy rides, even tried to make me pay for a few things other branches said were covered by warranty).

In any case, I will take my care to Tyremart during the course of the week to check the tyre ware status officially and get an alignment and rotation done just in case.

I love how people rate an entire brand for longevity.

It doesn't work that way...each brand makes tens if not hundreds of models and you need to compare like for like.

Of course a soft sporty tire isn't going to last as long as a harder commuter tire. The brand is irrelevant almost in that regard.

It's always the trade off between grip and longevity.

Probably due to them being from the same country, wouldn't be surprised if they get them at a highly discounted rate.

I would imagine simply by virtue of not having to be shipped in and paying transport and customs that they are already much cheaper.

Then on top of that any deals they make it will be a no brainier.

Yup I know, but they also put them on their German brand :)

Oh that's quite interesting.

Maybe they own Kumho?

****

Okay they don't, but colour me surprised at just how massive a company it is.

They run airlines and busses and all sorts of stuff.

Did some spirited driving this weekend, those General Tire Altimax Sports are extremely good value for money.

I'm talking mainly with regards to how SK supports its own brands, even in tech, Samsung and LG have benefited a lot.

We had General 13" tyres on the old Mazda 323 1600. I used to drive up a wet field with those without much slipping, sliding or getting stuck in the mud. Then the manufacturer replaced them with some horrible unknown brands that were bad even on tarmac.

The tyres on my 407 was made in 2006, no doubt the ones the car shipped with from France. Because I don't drive it all that much and due to the age they became so out of shape that the steering wobble at low speed was a concern.

I was surprised when I called around that I was able to get imported "CityRacing" branded 215/55ZR17 at R900 each (fitting included). So I did all 4 on my car with alignment for under R4k and they ride remarkably well.
