Hey Guys

I had my vehicle parked off for a couple of years. A mechanic did some work on it and I took it for a drive today but the tyre burst.

I guess I needed to change the tyres as well since they get brittle. I drove the vehicle with the puncture for about 700m. What is the worst that could happen, could I have damaged anything else? I could not change the tyre as it had a locknut, and I did not even know that.

Thanks
Kitty

When you get it replaced they will be able to check if there is any damage. Do a wheel balance and alignment as well. The worst is probably just a damaged rim.

Nothing would be damaged by driving for 700m with a flat tyre, unless the tyre was totally off the wheel, however parking the car for that long could have an effect on suspension components, which is totally unrelated to the tyre bursts, it might not be apparent now but it will soon come to the fore.

Yeah, I think my Hyundai Accent 2006 demo has some suspension issues. It's in need of some TLC.

Kitty I salute your camera skills, the artistry in that shot is amazing, it captures both the flat tyre and your distressed confusion with a salience that can only be far beyond your years. Don’t stop what your are doing, pure brilliance

What do you think it will cost to repair ?
My Car or you car? My car needs a new clutch, probably some CV joints, probably some other joints, maybe shock mounts not too lekker, it probably also needs a paint job as the garden technician might have used sand paper on it..... I guess 15-25K for me......  :crying:

You car probably just a tyre or two.... Don't know what size but probably around 2K for 2 x Firestones and some balancing and alignment.

But I am not a car expert. Check @TheChamp

It's nothing too complicated, rubber, just like on your tyres will perish more quickly if the car is not used, ball joints, CV boots, stabilizers, suspensions bushes etc, shocks would be the most expensive part if they need replacing.

When it comes to price it's all relative, a branded workshop or dealer can ask for thousands of rands for something that an independent mechanic can do for a couple of hundred rands, owning an old car if you don't have any interest in getting your hands dirty or are unable to is really not worth the trouble, scammers are going to bleed you dry.

If the suspension has never been renewed it could be better to take it to a suspension place, many of them around, see what quote they give you for a comprehensive job.

Remember not everything on the suspension is an emergency, except shocks so you can do what you can do in terms of high priority parts being replaced first, you can live with a couple of squeaks.

I would not be too concerned about the suspension, but the other tyres too, yes, tyres develop flat spots when parked for years, and wheel bearings could also. So a full set of new tyres, and bearings can be replaced once you start hearing them whine. Or you can check them by just driving normally with radio, fan and aircon off, put it into neutral, coast and listen. You may also want to open window or two.

That Xiaomi is not doing you any favours eh

backstreetboy I wouldn’t take that lying down, before you know it people will be recommending an iPhone to the op, after all she has been through

Rim looks fine. Replace your tyres.
Good for not stopping you could have been ambushed.
One can drive up to 5km slowly with all tyres wrecked.
More if you have to.

That rim is out of shape, can almost guarantee you that. So that needs to be looked after.
And after standing so long the grease in the bearings can settle. Would recommend you jack up and spin the tire a bit to balance that out. you might feel an issue then as well. lubricate all moving parts of the suspension.
That way you get to see all parts move or not move, get afeel where what might go wrong.

I had a blow out once passing the Rhema Church in Randburg drove the car to the garage next to Randpark Ridge mall, drove around 20/25KM\h, had to replace the tyre but the rim was undamaged. Put on some new rubber and never had an issue with that

We live in SA, you don't really want to stop in the dark and change your tyre. You can drive on, but you just need to go as slow as possible.
