Hi all

I'm looking to get new tires. It will be the first time I replace them in 40 000KM. I was told by the tyre shop I'll have to replace them all, sooner rather than later (I never rotated them).

They provided me with the following options:
175/65R14
Davanti - R650
BF Goodrich Advantage - R730
Goodyear - R750

I would like to know if it is worth it going for BF Goodrich or Goodyear, or would it be fine going for Davanti?

Wheel alignment will be R290.

I appreciate the assistance.

Thanks
M

go with the goodyear ...

I got around 55,000 kms on my set of Continental EcoContact 2 tyres (185/60R14), and when I needed to replace them in April this year, after having had them for over 6 years, Tiger Wheel & Tyre were doing a special on the Continental EcoContact 3 (newer version) 175/65R14 tyres (the same size you require) for R 699 each.

Here is the link for their current offerings & online specials:

I only buy hard compound tyres. I am not a wannabe F1 driver so dont need the extra grip of a soft compound tyre. Longevity is what I am after.

Palm Tyres in Maitland...
Just had a set of Falken tyres added to my car.
Got great service. Competitive price. Wheel balancing included in price.
Wheel alignment costed R250.
Free rotation after 1000kms
Falken tyres are exceptionally quiet and has a firm grip... For wet weather and especially our South African roads.

What's the OEM tyre ?

To answer your Q , I would spend the little extra and fit Goodyear .

Does anyone know of a cheaper place to buy Michellin tyres. I need 4 of 225/65/17. So far I have done 105k in 3 years and before I reach the limits of 1.6mm, I can do another 15k. I need tyres with tread wear rating of 600 or higher if not michellin
If you're in Cape Town, give L&Z Auto a call. Always have great prices and service from them. I think Michellin is their primary brand.

Never skimp on tires.
Also don't know how alignment can be done for R250.

Go with Kumho or if you are on a budget, Dunlop/Michelin. Don't skimp on tyres.

The only three brands I trust (in order): Bridgestone, Michelin, Continental.

Cheaper brands are harder and so they last longer, while more expensive brands are softer and can wear quicker ... but ride a lot better and have better performance under braking.

Check out Nexen Tyres, the only place that I've found stocks them is Minty's.
Got quoted R700 or so each for 225/45R17 tyres.

Currently have Pirelli P7 tyres fitted, done 33000km and they still have plenty life left, while having good grip and low noise

For the same price go for Toyo or nexen from mintys.

That said, the ones you quote will do the job like most.

Looking for discount is never bad. Yes Michelin is good but if I can find a seller who keeps less margin/profit, why should I pay more.
Nexens are OK, but IMHO could never be in the same league as Michelin.

This is the type of advice that gets you into random accidents in Cape town when it rains. Seen it many times.

Also felt it on a car where I had cheap hard compound tyres on the car when I bought it second hand. Would slip on hospital bend in 4th gear. Changed to good continental tyres and van do the same without slipping.

It's that cheap when they do partial alignment. It will only be the front wheels and also skip the camber adjustment. You won't know unless you ask, but they will charge extra to add camber adjustment and then again extra to do rear wheels and again extra to do camber on them. Can go up to over a R1000 one you do that. But most people won't know, they think they get a bargain at R250/300 and move on with incomplete alignment.
