Khayelitsha residents burned tyres to protest against the removal of 65 toilets in the Makhaza settlement on Monday, police said.

Khayelitsha police spokesperson Anneke van der Vyver said the protest happened in the Walter Sisulu area.

"There were about 200 people who were protesting," she said.

Crowds burnt tyres

"They burned tyres, but police moved in and extinguished the fires and dispersed the crowd.

"No incidents of violence were reported."

Van der Vyver said councillors and MECs spoke to residents, after which "everything was calmed".

Cape Town mayor Dan Plato earlier said the unenclosed toilets were removed on Monday morning after their enclosures were destroyed by ANC Youth League members and some community members last week.

Plato said the toilets would be replaced once residents had built enclosures themselves.

'Protest against ANCYL'

He called on Makhaza residents to burn tyres and protest against ANCYL "hooligans" and "thugs" who had destroyed the toilet enclosures.

"I want to throw it back at the community... that you need to tell those rude hooligans, those thugs, that you must march and burn tyres against those hooligans," Plato said at a media conference.

"What is happening now is that the Youth League is taking decisions on the part of the community without the community having any say in it.

"Given that the city has been prevented from building the remaining enclosures, we have resolved to temporarily remove the toilets until appropriate enclosures have been built.

"We are willing to go back and reinstall the toilets as soon as the community reaches an agreement with the Youth League."

I trust the D.A will come down hard on this DAN PLACO idiot.

This was a stupid move.

While what the ANCYL did to those toilet enclosures was ridiculous that is no reason to remove the actual toilets.

DA: "We will build Toilets with steel enclosures"

DA Builds toilets.

ANCYL: "We must break down the toilets with steel enclosures"

Khayelitsha residents: "We will help break down the toilets with steel enclosures, in support of the ANCYL"
Khayelitsha residents destroys toilets.

Dan Plato: "We must protest against the ANCYLs actions, they are hooligans!"

Khayelitsha residents: "We will must protest against the ANCYL who broke our toilets"
Khayelitsha residents burn tires like hooligans.

righto.....

This Khayelitsha crowd seem really eager to destroy stuff. DA, ANCYL, whatever, they not too fussed, just give them an tiny excuse to wreak havoc and they jump at it. Lovely neighbourhood :-\

Do you guys actually know what is going on?

They removed the toilets because the residents are breaking them. They said they will put them back once the residents completed the enclosures for these toilets (which was the original agreement)

This is by far the best thing to do. If they want to break them, we remove the toilets because they obviously don't want them. Show us you want them and we'll give it back.

As far as I understood it it was the ANCYL that rallied a minority of the community to destroy the enclosures.

You can't punish a community for what a minority of thugs are doing and you also can't expect the community to police the area themselves and punish them when they don't.

I do think there's an element of sensationalism here, and Plato comments in part seem to be taken out of context.

"I want to throw it back at the community... that you need to tell those rude hooligans, those thugs, that you must march and burn tyres against those hooligans," Plato said at a media conference."

I'd also like to know what the "..." represent? were some other illuminating remarks removed for the sake of sensationism?

This is how human nature works. You get the results you want by punishing everyone for the mistakes done by a few ;)
Do you think the majority will allow the minority to do it again after what happened now with the toilets?

I have a feeling you never served in the Army :p This kind of punishment works wonders :D

Agreed.

Let me tell you a story.

A friend of mine also did his national (back in the lily-white days of the Army). Now, the Army also provide ablution facilities for the soldiers, and these use industrial geysers, 3-phase.

The elements was connected in a star configuration.

Now, enter the bright spark, who decided to re-wire the geyser, and thus have the elements in a delta configuration.

He destroyed the geyser.

The entire platoon had to spend a month (I can't remember for how long) without hot water at all, before the geyser was replaced.

Ever after that incident, when said bright spark toddled off to the bathrooms for whatever, somebody always went with, to ensure that said bright spark doesn't fiddle with the geyser again.

*Sigh*

The DA start making real inroads into the community then they decide to commit political suicide the next week by cuttting off their noses to spite their faces.

capetownguy, tell your handlers in the DA that they are awfully close to losing my vote.

The problem is, that had the DA left the uncovered toilets as it was, there would have been a new article next week blaming the DA again for human right abuses. Taking the toilets away was the only way to prevent that.

Just another day in SA.

Building open toilets with no enclosures was political suicide in the first place. This whole thing has been one huge farce after the other and now we are back to square one having spent all that money.

No, it was an agreement between all parties involved. Enclosures was the for the families to provide in order to have their own toilets, instead of communal ones. It is not the fault of the DA that the ANC turned this into the fiasco it have turned out to be.

Thank god I've never served in the military.

I'm not arguing as to whether or not the punishment works. That is irrelevant. The only thing that is relevant is how it is unfair to innocent human beings.
