Tyres

Just had my cars (Atos) tyres replaced (all four). I went to HiQ as they had Perellis on special (R400 vs R600 for the Goodyears already fitted).
I had them fitted the Friday (2 weeks ago) as I had to drive a really crap road the Saturday (Malmesbury - Darling).

My wife agreed with me that it was better to have 4 new tyres than 2 new more expensive ones.

I guess the avoid cheap brands is all relative and I would rather replace my tyres every 40'000km than cause an accident because I was waiting to have cash to have "better branded" ones.

Just paid R2800 (discounted I might add) for one 18" tyre. The prices are rediculous these days! I could have gone with a (slightly) cheaper tyre, but its best not to skimp on the rubber that keeps you on the road :D

also just parted with R4400 for 2 17" conti sportcontact2 tyres 235/45 :(

I just got a flat this morning!:( My fault trying to avoid sand on the road ended up popping my tyre...

Gonna get it plugged.

R600 doesn't seem bad to me.

Replaced my 16" RunX tyres last year at R5100.00 a set

What size and brand?
My wall broke as per Tiger Wheel, I need a new one.
205\16\45 Conti's... they want R1500:eek::eek::eek:

Last year I got some prices for my car's tyres, just out of interest. Mine is 205/16/55. The better brands, like michellen, was R200 more per tyre than Goodyear and some other general brands. Now I wonder if you could compare these brands, like price you pay per km you get out of it, what brand would be better? I dont mind paying more for better, but in my case, will I get R200 more miles out of the more expensive tyres, or do you only pay for the brand name?
ps, I am a michellen fan, but R1200/tyre is a lot.

Have a look at the Falken FK452's. I paid just under R1000/tyre and I use 205/50R16's. Yours is more popular so prices should me much lower. Conti's for my car were just over R1500/each. Problem is my tires have to be at least W rated.

Thanks, will do. How these people charge these prices for a tyre is madness.

Malas in Pretoria (012) 357 7700. Ask if they have a brand called VSP.
VSP make tyres for Boeing....I have had them on for about 40 000km now and now problems....

SO ... buying tyres is simply a matter of shopping around it seems? I have to go get my wifes tyres done today (Golf V 1.6) and was wondering if there is a defacto best place to go. I'm in CPT.

I've had my tyres now for 68000km, no problem. Tyres shoudl last 2 - 4 years... depending on the type of car it is...

shop around

 You want my car.. just phoned as well to try order my new tyres (but get them from a friend which helps), this is my 3rd set, first was at 25k, second now at 51k

The tyres on my wifes Golf V 1.6 lasted 66000kms. They were Continentals but I'm not sure what model. I had them replaced yesterday.

Tyre industry is frippin' bizarre! I went to 4 places all gave me totally different stories about what to get and whats best etc. Conti's seemed to be out of stock everywhere. Most of the guys wanted to order stock and have me come back. Why would I do that? I've taken the time out to drive there and walk into the store. There are 100's of tyres lying all over the place and they don't have any stock for one of the most common cars on the road. Who runs a business that doesn't carry stock? Tyre people apparently.

What was funny was one guy spent 5 minutes telling me all about the best tyre for my car only to turn around at the end and say '...but I dont have stock so I'll give you these other cheaper ones that aren't the best but it's all I've got.'

I eventually got a deal I was ok with at Speedy. R950 per tyre for 4 Firestone Firehawks with their clever little marketing ploy of the all road hazard. If your tyre needs to be replaced you only pay for the tread you've used and they replace it with a new one. That of course leaves you with 1 new typre and 3 old ones so you need to buy at least one more at full price. Cunning.
