Uber closed for coronavirus lockdown

South African Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula has confirmed that ride-hailing services such as Uber and Bolt will be closed for the duration of the 21-day coronavirus lockdown.

Speaking in an interview with 702, Mbalula said that there would be special considerations made for public transport such as minibus taxis.

And the cadres enforce their cadreship once again.

What about the elderly etc who use these servces to buy food, meds and medical trips?

Taxis and busses will enable faster spreading of the virus. These need to be shutdown as well, but you chops don't have any back bone to tell that to the taxi operators.

It makes no sense, how will people without transport get their groceries or get to the doctor? We have not stockpiled, so will need to buy again in two weeks time. Also I was told that if I buy groceries online, I have to go and collect it, it cannot be delivered by OneCart, PnP, Checkers60 or similar services. But volunteers in our neighbourhoods may go and buy on our behalf and deliver it at our doors. This makes no sense at all and does not help the most vulnerable ones. Keep the online buying and delivery services going, it will keep people out of shops.

So the Gautrain or PE's Algoa Bus aren't public transport because they're privately owned?

Can't find something specific on the Algoia busses, but both your examples seems to have been shutdown. So...
