Two days ago I got an alert from my bank advising me of 5 charges on my credit card that appeared to be fraudulent. All were charges from Uber. All were fraudulent.

I don't use Uber, my wife does on occasion. She checked her ride history and found no record of rides for two months.

She logged a call with Uber, no response. I had in the meantime cancelled the card and my bank have reversed the pending charges. Yesterday another charge was declined after the card had been cancelled.

What bothers me is that those card details have only been entered online on Takealot.com, Uber, and a university book store. So the data breach came from one of 3 places.

Also, somebody seems to have created an Uber account with my credit card details. How is it even possible to link the same card details to another account without the existing account holder being notified. Just how flawed is Uber's account signup process?

Leading me to believe that Uber has shitty customer security procedures.

And, Uber clearly does not give a **** about customer service and customer retention.

Posting this to see if others have had similar experiences, and as a warning to those who think Uber is going to help in the case of fraud.

A relative had exactly the same.

Except in her case the credit card had not been used on Uber before, we suspect that it was skimmed at a FNB ATM.

The problematic issue is that these were multiple charges at approximately the same time, ie some rides were still in progress when new ones were started. On the same cc.

I don't know if these were on one account or not, but it does seem that the Uber security is quite lacking when it gets to simultaneous use of a cc. Whether it be from different accounts, or the same one.

Credit card? Then it could have been leaked or swiped anywhere.

Likely the book store.

Or anywhere that anyone had physical access to the card.

Why would they do this? Many people have cards linked to other people's cards and multiple accounts to the same card.

It's not Uber's problem.

Your title is completely incorrect.

This is CREDIT CARD FRAUD. You need to speak to your bank about it, not Uber.

And do it quickly before they reject your claims for refund because you were chasing the wrong cow.

It IS credit card fraud, but it is ALSO Uber's responsibility to put some reasonable measures into place to prevent credit card details used for multiple accounts without the other accounts linked to those details being aware. Multiple members of a family using the same credit card details is a legitimate use case. However, there is probably some additional security which could be put into place which is actually simple, such as a flag going to the owner of the original account registered with those details.

It is also Uber's responsibility to provide reasonable feedback to the owner of the card which was compromised. Even if it was not an Uber databreach.

Kudos to FNB for dealing with the issue. Cancelled the card and reversed all the charges in about 20 minutes.

Uber is the party who is not interested in their customers issues.

No. That's why you should keep your details safe. Next thing you're going to ask they have to verify that cash isn't stolen if someone pays with cash. People lend and use and share cards. It's not an Uber thing. It's a bank thing. Hell you can get numerous cards linked to the same account these days.

Must be nice to have friends you lend and share credit card details with. You should introduce me to these people someday. I'd like to borrow them too.

Totally missing the point. We might as well pay in cash for everything if technology companies priorities revenue collection over customer service.

No you're missing the point. It's something that happens when you're careless with your credit card details. Same as with your car keys, wallet, etc. - no use in blaming Uber because it's not their problem.

And yeah I share my details with close friends as well because not all of them have credit cards. Hell I helped a buddy buy some Taxify codes just now using my CC because he doesn't have one.

Nope, its your responsibility. And if its something out of your control, the bank will refund you.

I'm glad you feel technology companies have no responsibility to put reasonable safeguards in place to prevent fraud. Well done. Straight to the top of the class.

How would Uber, for example, put a safeguard in place for the OP's issue?

I'm glad you feel the need to the coddled and held warm in place with no regard to keeping your own **** safe, while everyone else should worry about your own stuff in this messed up world we live in. Well done. Straight to the top of the Nanny State voter's list.

If an Uber account is registered with credit cards details already registered on the system, then the other Uber account owner(s) could be notified via app/sms/email.

That's the simplest, and means Uber does not have to manage the process of verifying card holders. Or putting a block in place which would be a lot of admin. The onus is on the card owner to cancel their card if there is an issue. Perhaps a time delay in activation of the 'new' account if the credit details already exist on the system.

No extra administrative burden to Uber. Just a message and a short time delay in new account activation.

GF, mom, dad, brother, friend, all uber accounts linked to my CC at some point... Means I don't have to fetch them anymore.
