Uber shutdown in South Africa's biggest city

E-hailing drivers in Johannesburg are planning a shutdown on Tuesday to protest ongoing issues such as Uber’s commission percentages and unprofitable fares.

Drivers warned that people who use services like Uber and Bolt in Johannesburg should organise alternative transport.

Uber has become expensive and the quality piss poor.

The last few times I have tried to use them I kept on getting dropped. Make you wait 10-15 minutes, watching the map before getting dropped. Again.

Specifically, it seems that they have no interest in short trips anymore.

I only use them to get from Sandton to the airport and back. Mainly because they somehow still work out cheaper than taking the Gautrain.

A quick check right now from Sandton to OR Tambo:

- Gautrain: R228
- Uber Go: R185
- UberX: R211

Plus I also need to trek to the Gautrain instead of getting picked up at work/home. Gautrain prices need to be R150 or below to make sense.

They've done a shrinkflation. The new Comfort is just the old UberX, with schitty Corollas. And UberX is even schittier death traps like Kwids.

At the current prices you may as well order an Uber Black...
