How legal is this in SA? I have watched demos over this app from US to UK now Germany. Does it seems right for me to become a "taxi" guy without the right papers for my passengers? Look at this way - I buy a bus and start transporting people. To me the dangers with this app are many but number 1 is what happens when involved in an accident and you break your arm?
 
I believe you have to have certain certificates... That said I used the app the other day. Was a great experience except I can't pay them as they have a problem with Capitec.

Nah but my question is do you know what happens if you're involved in an accident in a bus, in a mini-taxi, in one of those R10/k taxis, in a reputable taxi service taxi etc. I don't really know what happens in all those modes of transport, but I'd imagine that if there is some kind of cover in all those examples, that Uber would have their ass covered too.

I doubt people have papers to cover "passengers" when you get involved in an accident. Even uber itself cannot go that far and cover ever vehicle on its system else it go broke. What do say to the insurance company when claiming? As far as I know, uber allows any car owner to be like a taxi. The taxi guys well half may have papers, the rest will not but all that comes out when something bad happens and passengers want to claim for damages. Also the registered taxi drivers (I mean metered or the un-metered but registered) would throw a fit if they found that Sirius was making money in CT driving people from point A to B.
 
Uber only provides the connexion between the driver and the client and takes a commission, they do not own the cars or employ the drivers.

They actually choose qualify drivers who bring their own cars and have specific requirements for the passenger insurances as well as the cars (I think minimum 2011/2012 model for example).

85% of the minibus taxis are actually insured only at CTU, so I imagine more than 90% of them are covered.

That safety and background check only works in US. I do not see SA safety checks. Do these guys have an office locally to manage the various requirements to become a taxi? Have they teamed up with a local car insurance company? If not how do they know that the car insurance is valid/genuine? Uber to me sounds good but an "American" product designed around American vehicle systems sounds complicated when used in SA.

Unfortunately, a lot of passengers find that there is no passenger insurance till involved in an accident. The driver will vanish like Houdini. The owner will deny having his vehicle used a taxi and blame it on some rogue person who had borrowed it. And the passengers will have to run around to treat themselves
 
I have 2 UberVans and an UberBlack Audi. You need to have passenger liability cover and permit to be a uber partner. If u don't submit the paper after 3 months of joining you cant get online and the system automatically bans you. And you won't get paid.. If you get bad ratings from customers ur banned too, uber gives a weekly bonus for best rated drives and highest trip count.

I don't see where this part applies only to the US:

"From the moment you get into any Uber product (e.g. uberX, UberBLACK) to the moment you’re dropped off, your ride is covered by commercial liability insurance. That goes for every trip in every city around the world."

World means everywhere Uber has operations.
 
Using it for business you have to have business insurance on the vehicle, and add Passenger liability to the cover = Sorted.
