Wireless Internet Help

Hi Guys

If you look at this range from Scoop

http://www.scoopdistribution.co.za/index.php?cPath=101_75

which device do you think will best help me on a construction site that has 9 sub sections and the
distance between them is like 500m away.I have a main container that has
internet access but I need it on all the other sites as well.

Thanks
DD..

Dear DD. Hi and welcome to the internet where information is TOTALLY at your finger tips. The *ONLY* thing required from you is to title your queries correctly so that those who can help you, can see you need help with something they're experts at in a field and give the appropriate advice you so desire.

Using "Ubiquiti" as the title for your topic will only attract people (like me) who will post something that won't help your decision much (like I am about to do) and would further confuse you.

"What type of antenna to use to boost wireless signal for internet" would have made sure you would have had a response by now. Hell, if you were inquiring about the Ubiquiti NanoStation 2 10dBi (the only thing with the one-word subject you have there), then I'd sort of understand, but you didn't ask what we thought of the Ubiquiti NanoStation 2 10dBi, you asked which device. Which makes my previous topic suggestion spot-on

/sarcasm & schooling

My answer:
Setting up the primary container that has the internet up with an omni-directional antenna and then setting up the other containers with a grid/directional antenna would be enough IMO

Does anyone know what sort of wireless device/Antennae the muncipal cameras on the main highways use, Also these
Sanral notification boards, i see they are wireless as well.

I am not too sure, but i would guess they would be using carrier class wireless equipment like Radwin.

An SXT with a 2.4GHz wifi USB stick at each subsection linked to a RB711 L4 with a sector or omni depending how things are layed out geographically.

Don't expect the wifi stick to penetrate containers. For that you will need an AP in the container connected to the sxt instead of the wifi stick.

If you prefer ubiquiti use it instead.

They use wireless? If they do, they'll use 5Ghz Wireless a. Notice that 5Ghz receivers are scarce in consumer electronics.

That is also what WUG uses. It has a 5km range. No other wireless network can reach even 500m (not according to the 802.11 specification).

Also notice that WUG uses high sites with LOS (line of sight). That means you must be able to see the tower because your antenna needs to point toward the tower. Even at 500m you'll have significant signal loss if you don't have LOS.

Such a large area is very difficult in terms of wireless. I'd suggest you get a professional instead of trying to DIY it. The field of wireless networks is actually very complex. Just like I wouldn't try to build a house, you shouldn't (IMHO) try to build a wireless network. Unless you have a hundred hours or so to spend studying all the theory. And plenty of money to earn you the experience you'll require. If you do, start here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11
