Hi there

I'm in a bit of a pickle and I can't find any relative info anywhere on the net... So here I go!

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with a Nvidia 8800GS card. I have installed the proprietary drivers from Nvidia. I output to a 19" LCD Monitor as my primary and to a 32" HD TV (via HDMI) as my secondary.

The problem is that my TV does not use the default resolution of 1920x1080 - if I display at that resolution quite a chunk is cut out on each side so I can't see the taskbar etc. I actually use a completely custom resolution which is along the lines of 1800X900 (I can't find the piece of paper I wrote the exact spec on right now and I'm too lazy to boot to windows to find it. BTW, windows allows me to change the res to right one and everything works perfectly over in the WIN world ;))

I have tried numerous settings and manually changing xorg files and a whole lot of other things as described on various sites but I've not found a solution as none of those articles were specifically related to my issue.

So can anybody tell me what I need to do or at least what I need to change? I'm not even sure if the Nvida driver uses the xorg file because nothing happens!

Another problem - I've now set my secondary at the default 1920x1080 just so that I can work on it (even with the cut of border) but now I can't enable the "Extra Visual Effects" from the Appearance preference menu.It just gives an error stating "The Composite extension is not available". I don't know if this is because of the previous tinkering I've done to the system or not

Any help would be appreciated!

okay this wont be much help, only to say that in 10.04 the xorg solution no longer works- I have a similar problem, in that my monitor displays a massive blue error message across the middle of the screen because of the default widescreen resolution, and what worked in 9.10, no longer does in 10.04.... I switched to kubuntu.... lets hope someone can find a solution....

as for the composite extension- is compiz fusion installed on your system?

Code:
sudo aptitude install nvidia-settings

System -> Preferences -> NVIDIA X Server Settings

Under GPU0 (or whatever :D), adjust overscan settings for the monitor of your choice.

Hey sn3rd thanks for your solution - it works!

I can't believe it was so simple :)

The image is not as crisp because it's still at 1920x1080 but at least I can see everything now!

I still have problems with enabling my visual effects however :(

I have compiz fusion installed but it's not working and I'm assuming it's because I don't have desktop effects enabled (because of the Composite extension error). Can anybody give me some pointers regarding that? I fear I might have stuffed it up whilst trying to get my display at the right resolution!
