Ubuntu 8.10 upgrade from 8.01

Ubuntu 8.10 upgrade from 8.04

so I started update manager and chose to upgrade to 8.10
the process started, made a list of things to upgrade and removed stuff and asked to restart. never downloading anything but a 160kb file of sort before removing stuff and asking me to restart.
now the only thing i get is the Busybox shell!?!?!?!? after restarting
wtf now:confused::(

Wcoetzee, the wonder of ubuntu have found you. I had to do what hawker suggested.
 
Firstly.... where did you get your hands on 8.01? It was never released.... but 8.04 was :p
You shouldn't have had any issues upgrading.
To upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10:
1. Do a complete update (apt-get update, apt-get upgrade)
2. Go to Software Sources, go to 2nd tab and select "notify for normal releases"
3. Go to update/update manager
4. Select distribution upgrade.....
Then it should work (I did it that way).

But since yours is broken, format and reinstall from a cd.
 
I did exactly as froot said and had no problems upgrading, except for a corrupt download which caused the upgrader to exit, after which it restarted where it left off.

Did you make sure that your system was up to date before atempting a dist upgrade?
 
AFAIK you cannot do a dist-upgrade if you are not up to date.
 
No idea. Taking adept as an example, last time I tried to do a dist-upgrade (feisty->gutsy) it first updated my current system before doing the dist-upgrade.

When you get back to your pc, try the following. Boot into the recovery kernel and follow the prompts to the terminal. Log in as root (I hope you have a root password set) and do the following (assuming you are connected to a network).

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade

Then you should be set.
 
jip, and no need for nvidia drivers. my card is supported, but i will still install envyNG

Why install envy? There is a graphics card manager built in... with several drivers from which you can select your favourite :p

its a wubi install. will also install kubuntu with wubi, and ubuntu 8.04.1 by editing the menu.lst file
googled the steps.
