Hi! I have a Novatel PCMCIA 3G card, and I run it in a laptop with Ubuntu Jaunty. It connects to the internet perfectly with Ubuntu's native 3G support. However, there are two things I need along with the internet:

1. The ability to send / receive SMS
2. The ability to switch between GPRS and 3G

I downloaded the Betavine Vodafone Mobile Connect software for Linux, however I can't connect to the internet with it (not a problem) or send / receive SMS (big problem). It does nothing when I click on "Send", and when I click on "Mobile" to connect to the internet it also does pretty much nothing.

I don't really need something big like VMC; does anyone know of something else that I can use to achieve my goals?

The fact that you are able to get Jaunty and 3G in one sentence is amazing on its own- with my Nokia and Jaunty nothing seems to work. Not even the E220 (when I last tried) dongle worked.

I can't tell you whether there is a way to switch between 3G and GPRS, but the sms function won't work in Linux. Simply because Nokia doesn't provide or support software for Linux.

The Samsung NC10 has built-in 3G which seems to work nicely in Jaunty but I don't know anything about sending SMS's in Jaunty.

Your Nokia  ?

You mean your phone??

Every Nokia phone I've tried has been literally plug and play on Jaunty.

My experience with 3G on Jaunty has been good.

You should try tail on dmesg when you plug in the 3G card and then when you try to connect:

dmesg | tail -f

Also, check if the software itself writes its own log under /var/log. There might be some clues in there.

If you see something, feel free to post the log.

With regards to sending SMS, I believe it is actually possible using either modem commands, or software that makes use of modem commands.

I seem to remember playing with some modem commands a while back, and they worked well, so if you can find some software that does the same, you're good to go.

You may want to google this.
