The phone will only be available to funders. If they reach their target then orders for the phone will close.
I don't think that is the case, I have emailed them to confirm.

*edit* What I mean is I only want to buy if they meet their target but before the campaign deadline ends.

It's on their page:

The Ubuntu Edge is an exclusive production run, available only through Indiegogo. All of the funding we receive goes directly towards producing the device for expected delivery in May 2014. The only pockets getting filled by this campaign will be yours when the handset arrives.

Why? If you are prepared to pay then why delay and deprive them of the sale when they need it? Either way you lose no money if Edge doesn't happen.

I don't think they've made this clear enough. There seem to be a lot of people who think they can just get one when they come out.

Anyone who watches their videos will know that when the target is reached they close the webpage and send off their manufacturing order as soon as possible.

I understand that. I only want to buy if the funding target is reached, but before the campaign closes. It's not clear that they will not accept further donations the second their target is reached.

I'm not prepared to have $800 worth of refund sitting in a PayPal account if they don't meet their target. Indiegogo isn't like Kickstarter.

Yes it is clear. The part where it says "Fixed Funding campaign" That means the second its funded, the campaign automatically closes.

I don't think that's how it works. If I'm wrong, please show me where fixed funding means it automatically closes when it reaches its funding. For example, here is a fixed funding campaign which received over a million dollars on a fixed goal of $110,000:

As I understand it, fixed funding just means it has to raise that amount for the project to receive funds. Flexible funding means they get the funds even if it's only 50% funded, say.

Assuming Paypal is the only means of payment, the solution to your issue is pretty obvious. Just make payment when it looks likely that the target will be reached. You'll pay much more, but that's your choice.

So do you think the two people who said they pledged $80k in the poll are just trolling? Thats more than R750k.

Must be. The indiegogo page shows none of the $80K perks have been taken.

Maybe rpm can forward their details to Mark Shuttleworth so he can process their orders.

Yea, that would be cool. It doesnt say that this is an anonymous poll anywhere..

The cheque probably lost in the mail, will ask my pa to write out a new one :D

They're not gonna make it, less than a 1/3 of the funds with 2/3 of the time gone.

Some of these Kickstarter/IGG projects have big pushes towards the end. That the initial R2m was raised so quickly is an indication of the price point people are willing to pay, so I think $695 will get a lot more orders. I'm surprised I only saw this today to be honest.

Well only 9 days left, I highly doubt its going to happen.

Yup, it's crawling now. Some serious rabbits will need to be pulled out of hats for this to get funded. Pity.

I'm surprised the Edge didn't clear its target with ease. It's cheaper than most flagship phones, has insane specs and doubles as an Ubuntu workstation. As a PC gamer and lover of Android it doesn't really appeal to me, but I would think that this thing has a broad appeal.
