And Windows users pirating the OS and all the apps on it? Have we figured that into the equation?

Then you realize that the figures become quite skewed since Windows users, by this comparison, are far, far more cheap than any Linux user.
I know of people who only have pirated software, from Windows, to Adobe, from GPS and mapping software to commercial POS systems.

Hmm, good observation. When I used windows I think everything I had was pirated, from the os to the apps. Now with linux it's all 99% legit.

Here's a perfect example of why I feel/think/believe Linux (and FOSS fans in general) are cheap bastards that I just found this morning.

https://plus.google.com/111572266130840576014/posts/SA4FzRi41iH

And I see this happen all the time. Throw intellectual property and copyrights out the window "because open source".

Now I'm not saying it's everyone or even a majority, but it's always the smell I find coming off some FOSS people. They have this open source righteousness about them.

Granted commercially people pirate and go crazy...mostly because they wouldn't pay for it anyway. But the same FOSS people do it and it's somehow their right because "it should be free and open source...therefore I'll just take it".

In my mind if you want to be pro-FOSS then that means you need to stick to FOSS-only and not justify ripping someone else's work off just because it isn't free and open.

Regular pirates aren't nearly as bad in my opinion because they don't present themselves as caring about the community/developers in the first place so it's irrelevant.

But FOSS is conforming to an ethos, a vision if you will. So if you are claiming FOSS on one hand but then rip off someone else's work on the other you are the worst kind of hypocrite.

Probably removed for the very reason I commented on it.

Basically a pro FOSS guy offering 20 odd Ebooks via his Google Drive that are commercial and copyrighted as if they are free and open source because that's what he believes they should be and there distributes them as such.

Did he say such? I got there before it was removed, had no clue what it was about, downloaded one book and saw that it was copyrighted, deleted said book.
I could not see anywhere that he claimed they should be free because he believes it to be so, to me it seemed like a normal pirate pirating goods.

I had a look at the site on my tablet, so if there was some text that I missed, sorry, but how does this differ from someone pirating Windows "because they overcharge and I need to pay this ridiculous amount for software"?

He basically said something like "in the spirit of open source".

It's very different from someone who simply pirates Windows because firstly someone who claims to be FOSS obviously knows more that a man on the street about this stuff and is therefore willfully ignorant.

Therefore it's a very conscious choice, unlike the person who simply pirates Windows to save money.

But we are way off topic by now and this will just go in circles endlessly.

It's my opinion and will remain my opinion regardless of the conversation here.

/put on tin foil hat

So what if.. They are using this as part of a research and marketing tool. Just a way to drum up support and do some market research without having to spend too much cash.

This approach removes a lot of risk from a business point of view.
You either hit the astronomical target and well; you have your business cases validated with a massive amount of orders or you don't but are able to easily gauge the market so you can kill it without having to risk much or see the responses as satisfactory risk to producing it anyway.

Some points that push me in that line of thought:
Indiegogo is not as successful as kickstarter for tech projects.
People will be require to part with their cash immediately because of paypal. (big barrier to funders)
Knowing the previous crowdfunding highest record was at $10.3 million.
They go and triple that as the all or nothing amount!

Knowing the barriers, do you think it is over enthusiastic, confident, silly or part of the plan?

EDIT: $32 mil / $695 = 46 044 phones they would need to sell
Yes there are many contributions already, for shipping and the cheaper funding options
Is it too much to expect to sell say 10 000 phones?
With the current figures, assuming they were to triple to make the target, they would need to sell 7500 phones. which is not too hard i'd think.

Yeah, I basically said this a few pages ago.
This is brilliant cos it's a win either way. It's the best kind of market research, cos you don't know if people will really buy until you force them to hand over money.
That's probably the real reason they chose indiegogo over kickstarter

So got my refund today.. Debating whether i should wait for a month and see what comes up next for Ubuntu edge or pick up an HTC one... Really wanted the edge :(

I would at least wait until the date the Edge would have shipped. If nothing else, the exercise has shown a demand for phones with those specifications, and I wouldn't be surprised if something similar came around halfway through next year.

That is the reason why it may have failed. This was a once off deal, if you did not pledge you would not have been able to get one. It was not a kickstart for production of the Edge.

You misunderstand me. I am saying that nakedpeanut should hold off on buying a new phone with his refund at least until the time that the Edge would have shipped, had it reached it's funding. This way he may at least benefit from manufacturers who produce phones of similar specifications to the Edge. I think that those phones will start being produced.

Yea my s2 is still cruising along with no probs and countless roms later. Will wait at least until the start of next year before looking at a new phone.
