Ubuntu for phones!

Great announcement. What are your thoughts?

I do not like Ubuntu and their philosophy of not listening to users, but I'm all for any Linux advancement.

What I would be more interested in, how will it sync with Linux desktops? Obviously they will have to give more effort where the market is (Windows), but I would love to see how they are going to tackle Linux integration, or are they going the Android route and neglect their roots.

I think they would be silly to do that, because they need some kind of leverage and the 30 000+ apps in the ubuntu store is a good start.
I think they need to find an easy way to port android apps as well.
 
That is another point you raise, not all the apps in the apps store is meant for a mobile. It will be interesting to see how they tackle this.

That would be interesting to see. Imagine being able to run blender on a phone, or open office.

Saw the video. Very interesting...

I would really like to sideload (is that the right word?) Ubuntu on my Note 2, to test it out. I am sure it will be possible soon.

I thought Ubuntu would have a closer relationship to Android, as opposed to being a clear competitor in the OS space.

I would love for there to be integration between the OS's...imagine booting into Ubuntu on your otherwise Android device, but having access to the same apps and data!

I could comprehend a difficulty with having access to the same apps already on the Android side of the phone, but at the very least, the same photos, music, videos and documents already on your Android side of the phone should be made available. I say 'side of the phone' instead of 'partition', because I would've like there to be tighter integration. Maybe there could be a porting tool to retool your current apps on the Android partition to be fit for Ubuntu.

I don't know much about programming, so I am probably talking crap.

RE the video, I think they should've gotten better industry commentary, that was a but weak at times.

Otherwise, I thought it was a really good presentation.

The mobile OS space is getting really competitive.
 
I found it quite interesting how they made the video very Apple like. Here's a screenshot of Scott Forstall introducing iOS 6

Interesting. Shuttleworth seems to draw a lot of inspiration from apple. You can see it in unity also.

I wonder what they're going to bring to truly set themselves apart, because it doesn't look like you can run existing apps, so they're starting from square one.

You talking about Ubuntu for Android, and yes I wish OEM's would take this route as well. What is sad is that its been out for almost a year and nothing happened. So I guess this move is to try and tackle the problem from another side.

Oh well, a man can dream....
 
This is going to become a forgotten endnote in history. Mark Shuttleworth is becoming increasingly disoriented. He needs to do one thing really well instead of grasping half-assedly at every interesting avenue that presents itself.
