Ubuntu interface changes taking hold

The new look is attractive. I like the Me Menu and that sort of stuff. That said I have found Windows 7 to be sufficient for what I need to do.

Since I only have WindowsXP installs (all legal) on my PCs, I'm very happy with Ubuntu. Then again I use Ubuntu for my work (software development) and Windows to play games - well, that was till I got my PS3.

Over the years I really have become a huge fan of open source, I use very little proprietary software these days, windows 7 on the laptop next to my Ubuntu install.

I have really impressed with 10.04 and look forward to 10.10

The really great thing about opensource is the fact that people contribute to build something, working towards a greater whole and as a community create something bigger. Now while many will choose to pay for someone else's labour , all the while pointing out flaws and weaknesses of software created in a in the spirit of something for everyone, as the many contribute nothing towards any solution, quite content to diminish the work of others.

Guys Ubuntu is a brilliant piece of software considering the whole OS in the majority is driven by volunteers, and I gather by most of the comment in this thread who have commented that there is agreement.

Dude...I hate Linux...always have. I'm not for the whole free OS idea. I like my Windows 7. very much.

I hate paying for a very, very old OS (VMS) with driver updates, bug fixes, security patches, back doors for hackers and extra eye candy , what the heck it can't even run on older hardware !

Windows xp and windows 7

Yes, and Win7, personally I have not tested it yet, so can't guarantee that it works (games I mean, apps I have tested, works fine), I have tested gaming on a Winows XP vm, and with decent hardware, it works fine.

If you are running older hardware, I would definitely go with Ubuntu.

I find myself booting up in Ubuntu more and more every day. The only time I boot into Windows nowadays is for my games (which I haven't been playing a lot of lately).

Ubuntu is ready for Grandmas and Grandpas. The iPad has proven that you don't need super specialised software to make people happy with a computer device.

I also think Ubuntu is fine for the average person lately. We are at a point where you can choose whichever OS you fancy and still be able to function either by dual boot or by virtualization. So if mom and pop wants MS Office, well that too works via Crossover or even Wine, so it all boils down to does the software I use work on the OS I want.

For most things OpenOfiice should more than suffice.

I do not hate Linux, but Linux / Gnome needs to fix their taskbar soon. The Windows 7 Taskbar is just so much better.

thats true

Um... well folks, worry not. Here is a screenshot I just took... if you like the way the W7 task bar looks... well... why are you not running Linux? You can make it look as simple as W7 easily... here is a screenshot of my windows 7 theme :)

Im running off a laptop with another screen attached, hence the two desktops that are different sizes :D

i suppose its a windows thing that people don't realise how customisable the desktop is in linux. it is the least of the reasons you should say no to linux.
