I'm loving it!

To anyone who wants to try, but is too scared, GO FOR IT!

Sure, it's a pain in the ass to configure properly if you're a new user such as myself, but when you have it going it's rocking!

The computer doesn't slow down, no matter what you're doing (on multiple desktops, which you can rotate in a kickass way with compiz fusion).

Couple of problems I had:

1. Couldn't play media files (mp3's, etc) right off the mark
2. Couldn't play DVD's
3. Couldn't get compiz fusion working straight away
4. Didn't know how to search for or install programs

Needless to say, I've sorted everything out there.

Two more issues before I can throw windows away altogether (not that I'm going to, I like dual boot, but I could)

1. Corel Draw X3 does not work
2. Adobe Photoshop CS3 does not work
3. Fonts still aren't quite right, even after installing ms core fonts...

Anyway, any new users who would like some questions answered from a fresh new user, I'd be happy to help. Any seasoned user who can help me with my three queries up there, I'd be much obliged...

Ubuntu is great, don't use it much (installed on one of my machines) but when I do I'm very happy I installed it :D

I installed it on my macbook, much more responsive and faster than OSX and XP :)

But compiz does not support my intel graphics so I need to do some tweaking to get it to work though.

Probably faster because they left all the functionality out.

Ubuntu suks that's all I can say. It is no match for Xp, much less OSX.

I haven't used a mac in a while, so I can't really say. But not XP? Please, it looks like a pack of crayons when you install it.

And that's the best way cause and I can add whatever functionality I want, not the M$ way of adding every stupid thing they regard as "functionality" and then providing no way of removing it.

When I've started using Ubuntu as my primary OS a few years back the fonts also bothered me a bit, but these days whenever I work on a Windows machine I keep thinking to myself "why does this fonts look so ugly" ;)

Then why are so many people asking to install the MS font pack?

The problem with UBUNTU (and I'll say it again) is that it is incompatible with a lot of hardware and for some, it will never work. That rarely happens with XP.

Linux did appeal to many because it ran on slower machines. Now even that has gone by the wayside with UBUNTU's 'live' installation routine. They are very very slow to fix things. I couldn't tell much difference between Gusty and Feisty.

Even XP does not support todays hardware out the box, you need to always download the drivers from the manufacturer.

If you introduced someone to Linux before Windows they wouldn't care about the pack. Linux could have taken the approach of get used to what you have or leave. But seeing as it's a minor issue to accommodate it was.

a lot is subjective. i would say some. My Winfast TV2000XP Expert TV card and Creative 24-bit Live! 7.1 soundcard will not run in XP or Vista without drivers. They run immediately in my linux distros (F8, SuSE, Kubuntu and Debian). I had a USB skype phone. Recognised immediately.

You are highly misinformed.

Because people like what they are used to. I've seen people do all kinds of things to make their desktop look more like windows.

This might have been true 3 or 4 years back, but these days most hardware just works, and if you have some odd device that does not work by default, you will probably find a solution/hack by doing a quick google. If something does not work the first time don't be too quick to give up hope. There are a few very nice linux communities that is always willing to help.

You still get the Alternative installation CD that uses the ncurses based installation. Ubuntu releases a new version every six months witch does not give them much time to make too much changes, but still they do. if you were using Ubuntu as your primary OS you would have noticed the differences between the releases.

Bullsh!t, complete and utter hogwash. Linux by default has more support for hardware than any other OS. XP has almost none (by default). Talk about an uninformed opinion. I have plugged my phone, my huawei E220 modem, my bluetooth dongle, my cannon 350d camera and two wireless USB devices into my system and they have worked without the need to install a single driver. Only the camera didnt need drivers installed in XP.

I guess thats due to your lack of experience on the subject.

You couldn't notice the difference between Gutsy and Feisty, what were you expecting to put a big red wallpaper saying THISISGUTSY!!!!!There are code optimisations, updated software packages, menu modifications, graphics effects changes and the list goes on. A new release evey 6 months is to keep improving this beautiful free piece of art.
Come on Skeptik, just a few months ago you were running your mouth off about how cool PCBSD is, try get nvidia graphics running on PCBSD even 6 months ago. That's enough.

sigh.

I have a PC here with onboard LAN / VGA / Sound.
It is useless under XP - Not one driver is "found" and the manufacturers web site does not even have that board model on it.
Load Ubuntu, and everything installs.

Not really surprising considering Ubuntu 7.10 is like a month old, and XP is what? 5? 10 years?
