Installing trixbox has given me a bite of linux again, so I have decided to change my server (media, file and internet via netoel) at home to linux.. I have had a quick look: there is a ps3 media streamer for linux.

So the question is : Ubuntu or Debian.

I'm uncapped so size is not an issue..

Ubuntu is based on debian I believe...

ran both debian minimal and ubuntu minimal on my server in the uk for about 6 months each.
Pretty much the same thing tbh :P

some say debian is more stable.

No issues with either IMO. Ubuntu is pretty slick now and I've been happy with it for 2 years, so I'd vote for Jaunty

I'd go with Ubuntu - you'll find a wealth of information on anything you intend to do on the web.

Debian unfortunately has taken a backseat to Ubuntu because of the sheer volume of users.

I know this is a bit off topic, but which media streamer did you find? I did some Googling this morning for something along those lines, and came across .. this

As far as I know a long term release of cool Koala is being released end of August, so if the OP is patient it would be better to go for that distro. At least then he'll have full on support for it over the next few years.

I use ubuntu.

For a mission critical server I'd probably use debian though but for a home server ubuntu is fine.

Depends on what you're after - the latest whiz-bang or stability. Ubuntu is based on Debian Sid (a.k.a. Debian Unstable), which is Debian's development release. Debian has three releases:

Unstable is always called Sid
Testing - Squeeze
Stable - Lenny

The Debian devs don't release anything as stable unless it really is stable. In around 10 years of using Debian alongside other distros, it has always been the most stable and trouble free. If you're doing a server, then look no further.

Although I used Debian (Squeeze, currently) on my desktop at work, I would add that if I bought a PC/Laptop for home use now, I'd look at using Ubuntu on it.

I should add that any documentation you find on either Debian or Ubuntu is applicable to both, 99% of the time.
