Downloading Ubuntu Ultimate 1.4 (Gnarly Gnome) Gamer's Edition now. Any thoughts/comments?

And shouldn't this be in the Linux section? Someone moved it back to General Hardware and Software?

WKJ: Why on earth would you wanna run Linux? :p For a server or something?

mh348 - Don't know, I'm downloading from Europe
Jonny Two Shoes - I'm not sure, but I know games such as CS:S work
xeo57 - Just to say I did it :p

Lol! I like that.. I also installed Linux once, think it was Fedora Core, just to say I did... But if someone where timing me they would have figured I uninstalled faster than the installation :p

Ubuntu linux

Thats like a swear word to me...

Its installed on the UKZN computers.. and was always crashing.
Probably was the setup involved, but none-the-less... put me off of using linux..

Nothing beats the compatibility of Windows :)

Eish, another Ubuntu derivative. It's hard work keeping track of them. Lessee... Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu, Christian Ubuntu, Ubuntu Studio, Freespire... Oh well, another iso for the uni mirror...

There's a 'Gaybuntu' aswell. *shrug*

I use Ubuntu as my file server @ home, hands down reliable and never gives me a spot of trouble.

Win2k3 also extremely stable and has the added bonus of setting up internal mail on the network.

Downloading Umuntu is just a waste of bandwidth. If you click on the order button, they'll ship the CD's to you for free - just need to pay the R17 at the post office...

Is Ubuntu Ultimate a proper Ubuntu release? I can't find an order DVD button on the site.

No, it's not an official Canonical (as in canonical.com) Ubuntu release. AFAIK only Ubuntu (with Gnome), Kubuntu (with KDE), Xubuntu (with XFCE) and Edubuntu are official releases that you can order for free.
Ubuntu Ultimate edition is based on Ubuntu 7.04 (http://ubuntusoftware.info/Ubuntu_Ultimate_1.4).

In case there are some ppl here considering trying out Ubuntu or any other GNU/Linux, remember that Ubuntu releases in April and October every year, so 7.10 is just around the corner.

Also, those familiar with the licensing issues of proprietary codecs and drivers, might consider Freespire as an option. It is also based on Ubuntu 7.04:
http://www.freespire.org
Additionally, Freespire comes with KDE, XFCE and more window managers/environments. I don't know if the official Ubuntu one does (I'm a Slack/Slamd64 user :D).

wow those look good.. can;t wait to see what the new kde will look like tho.
