Todays updates total 121Mb! A week after the last update, WTF!

I though this thing was supposed to be better than Windows?

At least MS only makes me download a few megs a month, this thing want to use up my entire cap in a few days :-(

Did you install the cd or dvd version?

CD, although I've installed a few extras .

Is it safe to turn off the autmatic updates? I'm quite happy to upgrade from CD every six months.

And possibly miss crucial security updates? No thanks. Webafrica has local-only DSL for R19 per gig. Carries over month-to-month. PERFECT for updating :)

Already have it, it's just annoying to have so many updates all the time :(

Oh noes! You have to download updates containing important security fixes and new features using local bandwidth! How ever will you survive?!

Just see the amount of updates as a testament to just how hard people are working on this distribution. I'd rather get weekly updates than Microsoft's "whenever we feel like it" updates.

I'd rather have Microsoft's 'first tuesday' updates once a month than having my paltry 384k line eternally clogged up downloading 'important security updates'

P.S. As a developer myself, I know 'important security updates' is just code word for 'lazy programmer was too busy playing WoW to test his code'. Clearly the MS developers don't spend all their time playing WoW like the Linux developers do :D

Important security updates aren't all that important for your home pc IMO. They are vulnerabilities in the specific program's code, but that doesn't mean they're all ready exploited. So IF someone would exploit them (which they prob won't try since 90% of Ubuntu pc's get updated) what is the chance they will attack you? And if you feel safe with running windows then you should really relax!

If you were running a server I would be of different opinion. But I don't consider possible vulnerabilities a threat to the average user.

Of course I myself download updates regularly. Not so much for the security fixes but mostly for bug fixes. There are some annoyances that pop up every now and then that gets fixed as well as new features.

And on the windows/ubuntu debate. If you spend R30 on updates every 6 months it's still cheaper than buying windows (or you have clean conscious if you stole it).

Then clearly Linux isn't for you.

Oh also, the Microsoft developers get paid. Let's not forget that ;)

Its freakn ubuntu. The security updates aren't that important. (Don't quote me on that)

Its not like we are getting huge 0-day attacks every other day on the linux boxes.

I'd say for home use, just update from the SA server using local only and stuff the rest.

Except your browser...that you *have* to keep 100% updated.;)

If it bothers you that much, switch to openSUSE. That uses delta-rpms for updates, meaning you only download the changes in a file. Ubuntu has to download the whole file.

I just wait til the end of the month when I'm capped and have local only. Delta-debs will come eventually though...

121Mb x 4 = ????
Entire cap?????
Very, VERY far from it!

The largest updates you can expect is when KDE or Gnome roll out a new release, and that will be something like 200-350Mb once off, so exactly how is this using up you ENTIRE cap? And WindowsXP SP3 is how big again?

The most updates I have had on Linux was just over 1Gb, on 2 different distros (Gentoo - local and Archlinux - international). And I have all the open source games you can think of installed here on my Gentoo box...

And by thunder, how is a 3Gb local account going to kill you , even a 2Gb local account will suffice for all you Linux updating...

Seems like you just don't like Linux and needed a reason to throw a fit. If you do not like it, use Windows.

Sheish........

Sounds like someone left their sense of humour at home......

Let's quote you on that. Havocsphere said security updates aren't that important. Let's start laughing on 3.... and laugh at "...stuff the rest." too... :D
