UbuntuOne music store available

Oh well looks like im going 2 hav 2 keep supporting the russians till these ridiculous restrictions are lifted...

Err, Windows has supported mp3 playback out the box since the day XP was released. Ripping to mp3with Windows Media Player needed a codec at first, it wasn't until later versions that you could do it out the box.

Anyway, I'm sure the devs will do something along the lines of that if you buy something in the store, it will automatically install the 3rd party codecs for you afterwards. AFAIK, these are already in the Ubuntu repos, you just need to choose to download them.
 
I'll just go with a Nokia XpressMusic, thanks.
5 million songs of choice should perhaps have about 1% of the music or around 50k (base 10) which I like.
 
Ubuntu is really taking it to microsoft.... Maybe I should make the move and start using mono develop for my .net coding
 
yay. yet another music store that won't work in this country due to digital rights issues.
 
the true irony of the ubuntu music store is that ubuntu is a south african word, the original developer Mark Shuttleworth a South African, but yet South Africa is given the finger when trying to download most songs as the article says??

because mp3 is not a native *nix format. Nor is NTFS. Doesn't mean you can't get support.

more likely SA regulatory issues than Canonical showing a big middle finger to SA. Exchange Controls *cough* *cough*
 
it's not about exchange controls.
digital rights has to do with artist's remuneration and the cut that the record labels take.
this is negotiated at a country level.
it's about the big five not wanting to lose their power and control of the revenue model - they think they can make more money this way.
which ironically only fuels piracy.
ask gary about the mafiaa if you want to know more about the subject.

the lame codec has been around for ages, but afaik mp3 is not redistributable without a licensing cost.
the source can be dowloaded but there are issues with downloading compiled versions in certain countries.

What kind of music does Ubuntu users listen to? I am under the impresion that Windows = classical, apple = pop and ubuntu = alternative?

Lol :D With me that's pretty accurate, other than the blues/blues rock that I also dig.

Ubuntu gives you the option to download 3rd party drivers when you try and play mp3's for the first time; gstreamer I think.
 
If you try to play an mp3 it will ask you if you want to install the codecs. It's just not 'supported', and the user has to make the choice to install 'restricted' software.
 
Is the uncapped a total price of R199 or do you still have to pay Telkom for the line rental.
