Ubuntu's Lucid - what is planned

In its Karmic Koala release Ubuntu unveiled the new Ubuntu Software Center, which will be expanded in Lucid Lynx. The objective of the Ubuntu Software Center is to have it replace all other software management tools including Synaptic, Gdebi and others with a single tool. Over the years Ubuntu has evolved a range of software management tools which meant that users had a range of different ways of installing software. With the Ubuntu Software Center this will be reduced so that a single tool can do everything.

Here's another vote for Synaptic, please don't scrap it!

By all means, keeps the Software Centre if you want, but don't get rid of Synaptic, it certainly wouldn't drive me to use the Software Centre, I will just be using "apt-get" more than I am now.

I'd like to have seen them include the newest Gnome but they have their reasons...:(

Howcome? Yes no GIMP but its only an apt-get away, anywho apparently banshee is also up for reconsideration to replace rythmbox and gwibber is also up for consideration for inclusion. :D :D
 
9.10 has cool stuff? It's the most broken release Ubuntu has had to date. Start up is slower, compatibility is worse and the GNOME desktop has stagnated (although this isn't really their fault). While I really like Ubuntu, I do hope that 9.10 gets written off as a failure and future releases return to the usual quality.

GNOME 3.0 better kick as much ass as the developers are aiming for. Personally, I feel the GNOME-shell project is doomed to failure. As hacky as Compiz is, I'm not convinced that JavaScripting is an intelligent replacement.

That said, KDE4 is shaping up nicely, so there's hope yet. Qt4ever.

I've yet to experience any of the issues you have mentioned.

I'm actually extremely happy with 9.10 and love it - I've also installed 9.10 on a couple of netbooks and all the users are over the moon with how well it works.

So b4 you go knock an OS, look at your ability to use it in the first place
 
No Synaptic? Nooooooooo!
I loved synaptic.... however, I only use Synaptic when I can't find it through apt-get......
It's a pity Gnome 3 won't be included by default.... Gnome 2.28 needs a little kick.

9.10 is pretty sweety...... you should try it some time.
My startup is blindingly fast (maybe you need to try something other than a XT) and everything works (read my point about your XT). Sure, the Gnome desktop isn't flashy, but yeah, that's not part of Ubuntu's dev work.
Ubuntu will never get written off..... why? ..... there's nothing wrong with it.

9.10 has been one of my favourite releases so far. I have tried quite a few now I think I started on 7.10 or 7.04 if I am not mistaken. I have found 9.10 quite stable (unlike 9.04 which I must've broken about 4 times and is prone to horrific glitches when running the ATI catalyst driver suite). One of my favourites of all time was still 8.04 though, fast reliable...8.10 was disgusting though, slow, glitchy and unstable.

In fact 9.10 is the release I found easiest to install so far. I have installed it on 2 machines and both needed only a single driver, not including the graphics obviously, but even the graphics driver was just a case of selecting it in a GUI window. I didn't need to run a single terminal session. This is the sort of thing a new user needs.

Nooooo!! No Synaptic and now no Rhythmbox AND no GIMP? Am I the only one that actually likes Rhythmbox? I use it as my standard player, I love that little iPod-like icon in the top right hand corner.

AFAIK, The software center will include an advanced option which is like synaptic, the Software center will eventually be an all in one solution that suits everybody... or so I've read.

I hope you are right. I really dislike that Software Center at the moment. Perhaps I am just adverse to GUIs that obfuscate things like required dependencies and the total size of the download before you press the button. Hopefully they will properly integrate Synaptic into it as GUI-wise it is still the one I recommend.

I mean this is a familiar scenario: you are near your cap for the month and you press the Software Center download button (or whatever they call it) to get something you think looks really interesting. Then you spend the next few seconds frantically mashing the "cancel" button when the download manager dialog informs you that it is at "xxKB of 500MB" just to stop it eating up your last 100MB of cap :D
 
Ubuntu 10.04

Very good.
Please Mr. Shuttleworth spend time getting Unbuntu to work well with hardware.
I have just messed up two USB memory sticks and took hours to get my new Nvidia Graphics Cards to work. Last week I did all the Unbuntu updates and now the Nvidia Graphics Card does not work again. :cry:
All the best to Ubuntu team for 2010! Keep going.
