Reports of two hurt as UCT shuts down

Cape Town - Two students have reportedly been injured after a man drove through a barricade set up by protesters at the University of Cape Town, members of the Rhodes Must Fall (RMF) movement have said.

On Monday RMF members took to social media to state that a “white man” had rode over two of the protesting students at UCT, and an ambulance had been called in to assess the situation.

“Reports coming in that some white man drove through one of the barricades causing an accident. Two are injured,” tweeted the movement.

“An ambulance is on its way to UCT. One of the injured individuals is a young woman [and] it is suspected that her leg is broken,” read another tweet.

The group also tweeted a photo of the man’s car number plate.

It was later reported that one of the injured had been taken to hospital.

Protesters standing in the road next to rocks they had placed there blocking access to those who actually want to study caused the accident.
 
Western Cape ANC backs UCT protest

Cape Town - The African National Congress in the Western Cape (ANCWC) on Monday said it supported in full the student-led protest underway at the University of Cape Town (UCT) related to the fees structure and outsourcing of labour.

“The ANC in the Western Cape is completely and utterly against the proposed UCT fee increase of 10,3 percent which is not only almost double the inflation rate but continues the exclusionary practice of this university on the basis of financial affordability,” said provincial spokesperson Yonela Diko.

The party’s declaration comes after UCT announced it was suspending all operations on Monday because of student protestors – led by organisations such as the Pan Africanist Student Movement of Azania (PASMA), the ANC-aligned South African Students Congress (SASCO), and the Rhodes Must Fall (RMF) movement – blocking all entrances to the institution.

The ANCWC’s support for the protest came despite RMF earlier this year saying President Jacob Zuma and Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa had “blood on their hands” for the Marikana massacre.

The UCT protest, which formed part of nationwide protests against fee increases at tertiary institutions, was sparked by student-led organisations at the University of Witwatersrand.

UCT probing prof who allegedly used graphic language about protesters

Cape Town - UCT has confirmed it is investigating an incident in which an associate professor allegedly on Monday used graphic language when referring to a group of protesters.

A video recorded on Monday morning by Twitter user Raeesa Pather, showing a man identified as Faculty of Commerce associate professor Peter Ouwehand allegedly swearing at a group of protesters, was retweeted over 300 times by the afternoon.

In the video, Ouwehand is seen getting out of his car and is heard telling the group: “You guys are not helping. Those poor students are not going to get any of their lecturers in here today. How is this going to help? Why are you doing this? Bloody hell, it makes me insane.”

As he gets back into his car, he is heard calling the students “****ing selfish ****s”.

Mixed responses

UCT spokesperson Pat Lucas confirmed the university is investigating this incident.

Responses by Twitter users were mixed.

“Yes, he’s swearing. It’s called frustration. Won’t you be if you want to teach?” @AnitaGeldenhuis asked.

@GautengNigel tweeted: “He is telling the truth, so what? I call them hooligans and thugs.”

But user @MissOgaufi replied: “His frustration today only is the frustration the students face daily, especially UCT students.”

@AshleyKittyFame agreed. “His frustration is minuscule compared to poor students who battle with fees.”

Attempts to reach Ouwehand were unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, the university’s acting vice-chancellor Professor Francis Petersen has warned protesting students to refrain from violent, threatening or unlawful behaviour.

All who participate in protest actions should remember that freedom of expression is both a right and a responsibility, he said in a statement issued on Sunday.

Campuses blocked by protesters

Petersen said the university had been informed that protest action opposing fee increases was being planned for Tuesday.

But on Monday morning, all of UCT's entrances to the middle and upper campuses were blocked by Rhodes Must Fall protesters.

Students are protesting against 'exclusionary fees', and the 'exorbitant MIP' (Minimum Initial Payment, the minimum lump sum required from a student at the beginning of each academic year).

Petersen said while the institution would “always protect anyone’s right to lawful protest, we also value and protect the rights of those who do not participate or who hold different views”.

“I appeal to all students and staff to behave respectfully towards one another, to bring their views over with intellectual rigour, debate and creativity,” he said.

“As students and staff of this institution, the power to change the institution and broader society rests with us. In fact, it is our responsibility. We should give effect to this in a lawful manner.”

They made a song and dance about a car driving over some lady's foot at the Wits one. Claimed she was "run over". Got to watch for that.

Savages resolving their grievances in savage ways. There is no hope at all for this country. If these are the literate pick of the crop which are supposed to be future leaders with an education then I do not know where we are heading. Savage Africa at play once again.

What will the future bring....

I remember people protesting things like the Berlin Wall or Mandela's lock up. This.... this is very sad. Unfortunately South Africans will protest (VIOLENTLY) over relatively trivial things. But we have to thank the left for that. The right to protest trumps the right to personal freedom and property rights, it seems.
