Cape Town - The University of Cape Town (UCT) says it will become Africa's largest "accommodation hub" when it opens its doors to 2010 World Cup soccer fans.

It said on Monday that from June 9 its residences would become a home-from-home for thousands of visitors to the Mother City.

Head of UCT's 2010 task team John Simpson said UCT and its huge residence infrastructure were ideally placed for fans.

Guests would have access to the university's extensive shuttle system, which would transport visitors to and from the airport and World Cup fixtures, as well as to entertainment and shopping.

UCT's already comprehensive campus security system would be beefed up over the tournament.

Single rooms started at R550 per room per night excluding VAT.

A portion of the profits would be channelled into the university's endowment to support "socially responsive" projects.

Starting at R550.00 per room per night for a students digs ? !

Do these even have their own bathroom ?

I dunno, but aren't there normally students living in them? Are they expected to take off for the six weeks over the WC?

yeah. they've changed all the varsity terms this year so that the students will be on holiday over the world cup.

i guess you have to. and all your personal belongings to, i'd imagine.

oh! and to answer the other questoin.... none of the res rooms i've ever been into had their own bathroom. not that i've been into that many. i also know that many of the uct residences are split by gender, so i don't know how they're going to organise the ablutions. or will they split the tourists by gender? what if you're a couple?!

At that price during SWC a simple room with a roof that does not leak is already impressive.

They do maintenance during holidays so they tell students to gtfo anyway.

Usually the case anyway irrespective of SWC or not. Else it gets stolen. Sometimes they also move people into other rooms in the res.

So UCT scores R 4500 odd per week per room - with a communal bathroom down the passage.

Over 3 weeks that's over R13,000 per room.

I can't imagine you don't get something at a Town Lodge or Formula for that price - including a toilet and shower of your own.**

** not at this late stage of course.

Yeah, normally you probably would, but not over the World Cup. :p
