I signed up on Udemy a few months ago and started taking an HTML5 course, are their courses or certificates recognised in South Africa? Can I apply for a job after finishing one of their courses?
South Africa’s biggest forum. Discuss, discover, and connect with thousands of members.
You can apply for a job without them even.
Theyre on the same level as Shaw academy. Best to get a professional certificate from coursera instead
How is Coursera's certificate different from Udemy? They seem to be using the same business model.
They're the same..
EXCEPT, some of Udemy's course can actually count as credit towards a proper tertiary qualification (at least in the states)
slight derail here guys
question for you guys, how does anybody make any money on that platform?
I mean they selling courses for almost nothing, an equivalent like IT academy or Boston/CTU doing exactly the same thing, but so much more expensive.
I mean are SA similar academies simply ripping people off?
when you can get an equivalent for almost nothing?

Subliminal messages to make you buy other stuff, and then affiliate programs...
Or in reality, pure and unadulterated volume.
For every 1 person who does a course at Boston or CTU, Udemy will be doing 10000 people as an example.
I think it is more of a volumes game really. And remember brick and mortar providers have to hire staff and have other overheads where as Udemy providers record once and they can keep repeating the offering with tweaks here and there as needed. And a lot of the providers have other day jobs giving training, consulting and such.
Yeah I know....
I'm a happy Udemy subscriber... think its great value for money.
It's getting pretty popular.
I'm currently creating an online system similar to udemy for a popular South African company.
its unbelievable value for money!!! I know Im asking silly questions as per usual.
I initially did my certs at boston, and hated it was such a backwards way of training.
get a VCR tape, and can ONLY watch that tape at the centre, when you finish, hand it back, cannot leave the campus
I mean yes you explain, its based on Volume, but surely they could leave the price at 2K per student and make a profit?
I mean at the current prices, its almost free, Boston and those guys could jump onto the same bandwagon and do the same thing.
I mean even IT-Academy, thats ONLINE just like them, has all kinds of weird and wonderful rules, and STILL charges 5K for security + as an example.
is it just that SA students are accustomed to getting ripped off? so lets the cycle going?
I mean its practically free at udemy, (well almost)
why hasn't the udemy idea not been "franchised"to use that word, locally?
are we simply too backwards and primitive to buy it?
Id love to know the prices, if its anything similar to IT academy, that charges everything at 5K and above.
It depends. Some employers will will appreciate the effort you put in to augment your skills on your own time doing online courses. Most wont.
Make sure that you have a portfolio of projects at the end of the course to demonstrate your new skills.
