I think a lot of scientists have this reaction because many people don't realise the value of research for research's sake. Unless something has an immediate practical application most people scoff at it. The researcher probably assumed Nicodeamus was being a smart aleck.

That must be extremely rare. Maybe you asked the question the wrong way or with a wtf tone?

From experience I've found most people will gladly explain to you what's going on, they actually enjoy sharing knowledge even if it means they have to do it in baby speak for those that have no clue.

Ja, that it pisses me off as well when people go 'what fscking use is that?'. A lot of things would not be around today if we all had that attitude.

All I can make from it is that he is trying to demean her achievement my reducing her to the stereotype of an African servant making sandwiches. That's just a guess though as I don't know, the comment doesn't make sense to me either

You are reading way to much into a silly joke. First you jumped for the race card (not surprised) then sexism.

Women don't belong in the kitchen any way, they can't cook and that's why most chefs are male ;)
