There is a high threat from terrorism. We believe terrorists may be planning to carry out attacks in the UAE. Attacks could be indescriminate and could happen at any time, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers such as residential compounds, military, oil, transport and aviation interests. You should maintain a high level of security awareness, particularly in public places.

UK raises UAE terrorism risk level to ‘high’

The Foreign Office has raised its assessment of the risk of terrorist attack in the United Arab Emirates to reflect a "high level of known terrorist activity" in the business and tourism hub of the oil-rich Gulf Arab states.

Security analysts said the decision to raise the UAE's terrorism risk to "high" came amid increasing intelligence surrounding a potential strike on one of the many western interests, from the oil infrastructure to Dubai's tourist playground.

For years, there have been concerns that this strong US ally could become a target for Islamist extremists, but no attacks of significance have taken place in the UAE, in spite of the arrest of several alleged al-Qaeda operatives.

"We believe terrorists may be planning to carry out attacks in the UAE," the updated Foreign Office travel advice said. "We continue to advise a high level of security awareness in public places, but we are not advising a change to travel plans," an embassy spokesman said. Changes to travel advice are made according to intelligence, local knowledge and input from diplomats.

Lets hope they can prevent it, it does seem like an obvious target for Al Qaeda though.

Somehow I don't think the rich oil sheiks will have any qualms about tracking down anyone even remotely connected to terror attacks in the UAE and having them promptly beheaded.

The oil producers, particularly the ones who don't do much except produce oil so there aren't other sectors to be affected I suppose. So that's the Arabs, Iran, Russia, Venezuela, who else?

I thought the US benefits as well?

They produce some oil but they're a net oil importer and use a *lot* of oil so it hits them quite badly. That's why you see Bush grovelling to the Saudis trying to get them to increase production.
