Ah -- dead, eerily-prescient, 20th century authors... they just can't stop proving you right, can they? In a decidedly Orwellian turn, British authorities are considering a proposal to implant "machine-readable" RFID tags under the skin of some prison inmates as part of a plan to free up space in the country's overcrowded prisons. Just like the nightmare world described in your favorite cautionary tales, the chips would enable authorities to track the location of implantees using satellite and radio-wave technology. The program would build off of the current ankle-tagging currently in place, and according to a official from the Ministry of Justice who finds the plan double-plus good, "All the options are on the table, and this is one we would like to pursue." Of course, the controversial concept does have its detractors, Shami Chakrabarti, director of Liberty, says that, "If the Home Office doesn't understand why implanting a chip in someone is worse than an ankle bracelet, they don't need a human-rights lawyer; they need a common-sense bypass." Shortly following this statement, however, Shami was taken to an interrogation room and outfitted with a rat-hood, and all record of her existence was erased from state records.

And if this person that is being chipped and released a convicted Paedophile that lives next door to you.. will your perception change?

This will never get past the parliament table... otherwise Barcodes would already be tatoo'd on every prisioner.

Certain people should suffer their rights to privacy to protect the majority. It's a good thing. Only when Governments/companies force such measures onto innocent people should we protest (and do so with force if needed).

I agree with the sentiment. I just don't agree with the RFID tags. Nothing to do with prisoners "rights". Just keep them in jail. Build jails like they build housing estates... upwards!

This is crazy. They should be in jail removed from society serving out their punishment. How is a chip going to stop them re-offending?

If there is no space build more jails. Also free up space by putting to death child rapists and murderers

Surely there are some deserted islands somewhere where they can be dumped :D

This should be implemented in South Africa

In the UK, people on Parole get a ankle-tag... and they are monitored where they are by the police at a control room.

for example.. a Pedophile may not go near a school or places where Children are (playgrounds etc etc)

A Person who is on a ASBO order may not go to drinking establishments and city centres.

If a crime is committed, they review the location information and crime category... then just go knocking on the persons door.

I had my car broken in to, and all the locks were smashed.. 8hrs later a person was arrested due to that tag. (fingerprints were found all over my car) As it happened the person was paroled a week earlier. (Dumb criminal?)

Its a known fact, jails DO NOT rehabilitate people, and when they get out, 90% dont follow a 'crime free' lifestyle. (Face facts, once you are convicted, the chances you will re-offend)

Interesting that the UK with a much higher population than SA experiences overcrowding with 80,000 inmates. What is our prison population like?

I wonder if they considered that you can't have the chip RIGHT underneath the skin, as you'd get someone who would just cut it out? It would need to have a temp sensor of sorts to make sure it's still in a human body. This, of course, opens up a whole range of other problems. Heat-mules and the like, who would carry around 10+ of these things for pay :p
Actually...that's a good business idea :D
