It will most likely be network locked. So either make sure it is unlocked before you purchase it or that you can have it unlocked in SA.

If it's one of the Huawei devices you can flash the Vodacom dash over it or better yet the generic Huawei one.

How do I know its a Huawei?

as long as its a wcdma modem it should be fine... what brand is it? i have a huawei i got from china and it works fine... all vodafone branded ones should work fine... if ur on vodacom then create a new connection and set the APN to internet and dial *99# with everything else blank, i think its similar for mtn, just call customer care if u hav a prob...

if u r having a problem of not being able to find signal then it must be a hardware problem, it should pick up at least gprs signals... try re-inserting the sim and search again...

hope this helps;)

look on the modem itself, there are only very few brands available... if it says HUAWEI somewhere on the modem then its a huawei... otherwise it could be a ZTE or Novatel... in that case i am no longer qualified to help with my experience...

Good start

Just remember that the unlock and flash are 2 different things.
Unlock deals with the carrier lock (i.e. you can only use it with Vodafone UK SIM)
flash updates the software dashboard that installs the drivers and manages the connection to the 3G network.

Yes was purchased in the UK, I would preferably like to flash it myself if someone here can assist with links to relevant software for flashing

Firmware upgrade does not touch the carrier lock if it in place. It might however put one in for you if it was blank (as ginggs has found out when testing foreign firmwares :D).

There are a number of "cell shops" that offer unlock services. Check your local gumtree and the likes.

Edit: You can also try this online service: http://www.kulankendi.com/ - I have not used it myself so I can't vouch for it.

Is there a way to unlock it without having to pay someone like downloading software and doing it myself?

Managed to update dash board but its still not picking up network?

Purchased from Vodafone then most likely will not work. There are other outlets that carry unlocked Vodafone modems. Even if it were unlocked, you wouldn't be able to use VMC lite unless you connect to Vodacom or use alternative software.

Hi

Send them a request for unlock code.

Here
