UN wants a new global currency

Because its not logical or sustainable to set monetary policy globally which is what this amounts to. They're having enough problems within the EMU.

The problem for China is that if they want to continue to peg their currency at a weaker level to sustain export led growth they're going to need to continue to buy US$-denominated assets.

Yes, they have built their entire economy on export driven economy, and therefore they require such a policy.

They are in the process of aquiring enormous amounts of gold and in the future are planning to have their currency backed to a certain amount by gold.

They know exactly what is happening, and they know what to do to change things around. Make no mistake, they are going to take advantage of their fortunate position going into this crisis, and when they emerge as the worlds new superpower, it will be a better place. The Chinese are better at economics and diplomacy than America.

Those of you who will say they are a ruthless people and a dictatorship, I believe this is true as well, but most powerful governments are the same. The US tortures people in terrible ways and so does the UK. China has 1.3 billion people to manage and that must be a very difficult thing to do. I don't know what the answer is for China, but they might not be in such a strong position were it not for their system of government.

India is the largest democracy on earth, and you hear many diffuculties with running such a large country. here and here

For all of you that say China need the US to survive, They do need them for now, but China is buying up resources all over the world to ensure that it will be able to satisfy it's monstrous industrial needs. China is a fresh Industrialist country and have all the resources necessay to fulfil the needs of themselves and their neighbours. Just look how much dollars China is giving to eastern European countries and building economic partnerships with African countries.

Flawed. And very.
They are buying up resources for what? To manufacture more goods to export.
You tell me what China is going to do with Copper and Zinc just because they bought the entire stock? Go HAHA we now have the minerals, but now what? Basic economics constitutes that China buys, in order to create goods, that will meet demand.

China doesn't need the USA? Please, grow the Chinese market near to the consumption levels of the US, then China will be fine. Until then, I just don't see the 1 Billion+ people reaching GDP per capita that the USA has. Not even in 30 years.

The thing is China divesting out of the US dollar at some $100B +- per month and buying hard assets and real estate all over the world.

That the result of a huge current account surplus, which mind you isn't a good thing. Ask Japan and their lost decade, do some studying. China buying assets is desperation, they need to slim down that surplus. Deflationary pressures are not a good thing.

To me it looks like the west needs China more...

Its fairly logical, flows from basic economic principles.

I think you'll find those principles are not widely known amongst the conspiracy theorist nutjobs. This thread is awash with imminent epic fail...

Its fairly logical, flows from basic economic principles.

As logical as when the US bailed out the banks with a figure they pulled out their @ss

Or as logical as Madoff Investments that every hight street economist raved about.

And the US created it's wealth out of what? on Credit Expansion, and this was only possible because it is the Reserve Currency for the world and Oil and Trade accounts were settled in the US dollar.

it was this logic that globalisation was built on with all the US's industries being exported to cheaper regions of the world for more profits by the greedy multinationals and investement banks.

These Thatcherism/Reaganism policies of the 70's are coming home to roost and it doesn't look good for the US, no matter what you want to believe.

The next crisis is around the corner with Commercial Real Estate bonds turning bad and no possibility of rolling over the Debt.

The "prosperity" that the US created was an illusion and the only result actually was an increased debt load.

The US is having to borrow $250 billion debt to run their country each month, and this is unsustatinable.

perhaps you should study a bit more, because the US has made this mistake, and China has the US by the balls, but in the process, it has got itself in a bit of a bad situation at the same time.

Nevertheless, it's position is far stronger than the US and it has a new industrial base to work from. The US has almost nothing, and a population that have been trained to be good consumers, not workers.

China's current policies are to improve the economy internally and to create more of an internal consumption economy. It has 1.3 billion people and a highly educated workforce with 5-6 million graduates each year.

Japan's situation has nothing to do with the situation China is in. I don't know what you are trying to refer to. Japan's situation is more in line with the US's current situation with Huge Banks and terrible losses that were propped up by the government and not allowing bankrupt firms to fail, leading to stagflation. Fortunately for Japan they had the High Tech industry to help them maintain an economy.
