Unauthorised drone spoils air show

The authorities are way behind worldwide, not just in SA. The tech could be useful but it's taking way too long to do anything about legislation. The tech could also easily be used for bad, you can't not have legislation.
 
Where there any notices that the use of drones had to be authorised at the show ?

Ill bet there isnt even a "form" to authorise drones at the show.

They guy was an idiot, but so are the organisers. They probably never even thought of the possibility that someone would fly one.

Maybe they thought people would be intelligent enough to think high flying drone where there's low flying aircraft.

I doubt they thought about it at all. Just like the guy didnt think what the possible consequence of flying his drone in the same air space as fast jets could be.

Stupidity isnt a crime. So he did nothing "wrong".

- Flying only under 120m
- No flying within 4.2 nautical miles of an airport
- Flying only in line of sight of the operator (500m)
- No auto pilot flying or night flying
- No flying over public property and roads without permission.

What it does is give you an avenue to prosecute, hopefully reducing life threatening incidents.
 
Some of the drones with built in GPS have been geo-locked wrt airports in U.S. You can't fly it within 10miles (I think) from any airport - even if you wanted to.
How up to date the manufacturer's are regarding airports worldwide? Who knows.

Might be a good start to prevent this type of idiocy.

Yup, sounds like at least broke the last rule. Has he been charged, fined or anything ? Maybe the authorities are as ignorant of these regulations as he is.

Very likely, though the aviation guys should know more than most. He actually did us all a favor - the more publicity, the quicker the powers that be will get their fingers out their ears.
